EX3 Compression Ratio

is the compression a flaw with the EX3? is it true it handles like HDV format? or is it better than HDV? i'm assuming it's better, but i've heard otherwise.

XDcam-HD/EX is miles better then HDV. While based on the same principals Sony somehow managed to do it right with XDcam, at least the 35mbps flavor. After working with it almost daily for over a year, I have been completely unable to break it in aquisition it all kinds of environments. Bringing it into post and pushing it - really far - can cause it problems, but for the kind of correction people normally do to their video in post, I would say it holds up remarkibly well.

I'd like the new 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec option direct to SxS card just for those times I really want that little extra, but with the nanoFlash option I can add that later if a client really needs it...

I don't get it.
Is it possible to record 4:2:2 50Mbps directly on the cards?
I thought this option was only available through the HD SDI out.

thats right. I said I would like it, because I don't have it ;-)
Really what I would love is a nanoFlash with SxS slots. I don't need long run times with anything I would shoot to nanoFlash but I really don't need to buy CF on top of the SxS I already have, but thats just my personal needs, I can understand why they use CF.

That would be very nice option, and make it HD422 codec like the new XDCAM PDW-700 to match.

I don't quite think Sony is going to give us the same MPEG4 4:2:2 codec in the PDW-700 in a sub-$10K camera-- even as an option. I wish. I hope Sony reads this and just to prove me wrong indeed does offer such an option.

I prefer the inexpensive CF cards used in the Convergent Design prices to very expensive SxS cards. Let's see--- $1500 for 32gb SxS card or $125 for 32gb Transcend CF card. Hmmmmm.....

Also note that Convergent Design is using MPEG2 compression as opposed to the XDCAM MPEG4 compression.

My more immediate wish for EX1/EX3 is on-camera interface to professional batteries, but that's another thread.

Hi Ned,

As far as battery source and positioning, what is your plan to attach the NanoFlash to the back of the EX-3?
I've been following other threads and I'm a bit lost.

The nanoFlash uses the exact same codec chip as the PDW-700, sourced from Sony themselves. The nanoFlash has the advantage of being configurable to 100Mbit long-gop and 160Mbit i-frame. That makes the encoding superior to the PDW-700, though not the actual image from the EX3 itself. From what I've read 100Mit is virtually indistinguishable from uncompressed to the naked eye.

Other innaccuracies in your post have already been covered, but I'd like to see you shoot with a nanoFlash for $125. Before you go there you have to buy the unit, which is much more than $1500. That may be a price that is great value for the quality but you can't just compare media costs alone.

But your not going to do it at all with SxS cards..:Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Another nice thing about the Nano or XDR is the fact that you can just
about put it on any camera... CD has pass thru devices for this..
