We have EX3 that we shoot with but we're looking for a couple EX1/Rs for second unit jobs. what would be the recommendation... getting a EX1R for 6300 or a EX1 for 4000-5000?
I can't decide for you, but consider a few things: the new EX1R is with support fromSony and the used EX1 probably not anymore. The new one can be returned easily when a defect shows up.
And you should consider whether the modifications of the EX1R compared to EX1 is worth the difference in price. Do you need the ability to shoot SD? (Just to name a thing)
Have a look at this. It convinced me to get the EX1r. Evidently the actual eyepiece finder (not the flip out LCD) is better. For me, the biggest advantage is the better handle design and the on-off switch that now locks.
The viewfinder image is fantastic now.
The 'R' doesn't have the dreaded red shadows problem, so the colour's loads better.
You have a proper HDMI output to monitor.
You have up to 15 seconds cache recording - (one of my favourites).
You can flip the image (upside down) - for Letus extreme etc.
The modified hand grip is far more comfortable.
They've ditched the membrane buttons under the handle for proper buttons.
1440 codec.
Shoot in SD if you wish.
Oh - and they've moved the in/out connections to the rear right of the camera instead of under the hand grip.
I probably missed a few but it's a FAR better camera. I still have the EX1 for multi cam shots but the 'R' is doing nearly all the work - so much more accurate to focus.
I just wish they'd give us the ability to:
1. Record audio without video.
2. Ingest direct to ProRes 422 instead of having to go to XDCAM first.
3. Up to 2.5 stops of under-exposure in the TLCS level menu.
