EX1 workflow issue

Hello,

Have purchased the EX1 camera and am struggling with one small aspect of my new workflow. As i have gleaned from reading a lot of expert opinion, it is wise to back up all my footage to both external hard drives and to dual layer DVDs. The hard drive method has proved no problem. I have spent the last 24 hours trying to iron out the backing up to DVD DL method. It also strikes me that this could be particularly useful for giving the footage to a client as handing them a hard drive is not always practical. I have (just) managed to copy an 8 gig S x S card onto a DL DVD and am pretty sure the media is there however i am currently unable to re-import the media to Final Cut Pro. I have tried both the sony clip browser software and the XDcam transfer method but still cannot get Final Cut to import the footage from the DL DVD. Obviously this isn't a necessity at this stage as I also have the footage from the cards on the hard drives. I am merely imagining a client using the DL DVD and struggling to import it. Also for my own peace of mind, if my hard drives were to fail i would like to know how to reimport the footage from the DL DVDs back into Final Cut. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I were using DL DVD, I'd treat is strictly as an archive - i.e. put the whole SxS structure on them. Then, should need be, copy it back from the DL DVD to the HDD, and only "import" (whatever that means) from there using the Clip Browser / XDCam Transfer.

I don't undertsnad why you still trying to "import" from the archives, rather than simply copy from it...

Thanks for your response. Sorry am inexperienced with this technology.
I think I understand your point - it is not possible to extract the files directly from the DL DVD into Final Cut Pro. First, if the need arose, i would copy the DVD DL onto the HDD and then from there I would restore the media files into Final Cut.
Would you say that it's not really practical or desirable to use the DL DVDs to give to a client?

Nowadays usb thumb drives are so cheap. You might want to just give those to your clients to keep. You can get customized thumb drives with your company name, tel no, email, url ....etc for a little guerilla marketing.
