Ex1 Lcd

I know it's been beaten to death, but on Monday I got to check out the EX1 and it's LCD and all of that and man alive does it make the HVX LCD look like such a piece of crap. It's the bigest problem I have with my beloved HVX. I'm hoping that we get this figured out on the 170. Not only in it's sharpness. but also in it's size and scope and what's available on the screen. I've been forced to use a tool for two years that just plain and simply sucks and when you see another cam that has done it right, it double pisses you off. Sure, I use the viewfinder a good deal of time and always outside, but wouldn't it be nice to be proud of that you see in the LCD when showing it to clients. I'm tired of explaining that the real footage won't look soft and that it looks better.

Overall the EX looked like a solid tank of a camera.. man it's a lot heavier than it looks too and might be tough to handheld, but it's got some great low-light quality and that LCD alone is just stunning.

cheers all and just like to rant a bit and hopefully Panny will get their act together for the future versions.

I always use a 1:1 (full HD) monitor on set to controll focus and all.
I rarely work with the HVX LCD, but I never go handheld or run and gun ether.

Only exeption is on stedycam - I use a little 7" for framing on the rig.

Apart from the firewire port on the original HVX200, the only item that marked a huge disappointment moving from our Z1U was the LCD screen on the Panasonic.

It simply didn't come close to the Z1U.

Barry says the 170's LCD has been improved, but I wish Panasonic would bring it up to a higher level.

This is a common, almost prevalent, complaint.

I use an HD monitor too.. but for so much of what I do I can't bring a monitor with me and I do shoot a lot of remote nature shoots, sporting events, and concerts where a big monitor isn't prudent.

I too hope that the 170 is improved... In terms of it's shape and image. I was just sick looking at the EX LCD.. I mean you can actually tell when you are in focus without having to use the focus assist. Now, I've had my HVX so long and I do know what's in focus and what's not without Focus assist, but it would still be nice to be able to show clips to clients or whatever without cringing about the way it looks... So sure the EX has a rolling shutter which isn't good for a lot of things, but they did get their electronics and LCD right for sure. The lens is also pretty sweet too. Competition is good for all of us and Panny needs to step up in one bigtime area. I mean this isn't just an inconvenience or a bad engineering design like the power adapter which forces you to jam the cables on the inside of the cam. I mean, who was the genius that designed that power adapter? Maybe the same one who put the controls upside down?
