EX1 batteries...

could any current user of the EX1 tell me....
Does it use the same NP-F infolithium L batteries as old cams like the PD150
thanks

No unfortunately not. It uses a new type of battery that so far hasn't been cloned by battery manufacturers, so you have to pay full whack for it at the moment.

ok thanks steve.
hmmm... so the 7 Batts i have for my PD150 are gonna be useless then.

typical in built obsolescence from Sony eh!

The EX1 uses BPU models, they are bigger.
There are 2 models:
BPU-60 lasts for aproximately 4.5 Hours
BPU-30 lasts for aproximately 2 Hours (which comes with the EX1)

BP-U60 doesn't last 4.5 hours on my ex1. I go through two of them plus a BP-U30 when shoot a wedding event.

Might last that long if you use the viewfinder but certainly not with the LCD.

Do not hold your breath :-) my sources tell me that reverse engineering the Sony Infolithium code is so painfull that they just are not putting their resources into doing it. The potential demand for the BP-UXX would be much less than the L series, so it is not worth it to them. Without getting the code working your camera would not power up.

I can believe that. Otherwise we would have seen them on the market already.

Thats why I said approximately =).
We always quote at least 2 batteries with the EX1 for our customers.

I've noticed that the time remaining meter is not accurate. It can say 240 minutes remain, and a minute later that number changes to 235 minutes. I was shooting something two weeks ago where I had 16 minutes of battery and 16 minutes of SxS left. As the recording rolled, the SxS went to 15 minutes remaining, while the battery went to 14 minutes. By the time I was down to 12 minutes of SxS, the battery shutdown the EX1 with 5 minutes remaining.

Don't believe the "long" estimated remaining times. In reality, probably 2-3 hours shooting from a BP-U60, so plan accordingly.

I hope they come out with a larger battery soon. I'm used to 11 hours of record-run time with an NP-F960 on my former VX2000.

We are getting a Swit S-8U62 battery in for testing, assuming it works out well, will start offering it for under $200.

Because I would rather just plug the battery into the batter socket and thats it. Having to have an extra lead to pug in to get the Swit battery to work just seems a work around for a small saving.

To make up for that pain there is a 14.4V D-tap power socket. Plug in a LED light etc. To some this is very valuable, for run and gun shooting.

Ah OK. I see what you mean. For me this is a piddling inconvenience compared to the huge advantage of being able to power my camera-mounted light from the same battery. That's the real appeal of the battery for me. The "small saving" is just an unexpected bonus to that big benefit.
