Hi there guys, I was working away with a copy of HD Rack 2.0, and at the same time was wishing I had a notebook or laptop (for doing a variety of things.)

Being a budgeted HVX user though, it seems great that I could utilise this software with my new computer aquisition (especially until the cineporter comes out)

However I was wondering gents, if you could give me any tips on what specs a computer laptop or notebook should have, to ensure that I can capture from HD Rack and that it can run smoothly? I am only using it for word processing but i would like to use it as a monitor and storage transfer to my editing system (a bulky thing at home)

Preferably I'll end up purchasing a compie from scan (link below) just one of many uk retailers, but if uve got any other links recommendations for me then id appreciate the help :) (My budget is about the lowest i can get away without compromising actual basic efficiency)

I'm able to capture all formats that the HVX supports with no dropped frames using an older Toshiba with a 1.5GHz P4M processor to an internal 7200RPM drive.

Ah righto thanx lads, is there anyone here thats used the 5400 rpm HD in their compie thats experiened any problems or?

I was using one of my older laptops that had a 4400rpm drive, it was struggling on the CPU and the drive (HDD message flashing). Someone correct me if I am wrong, does DV Rack record to RAM to the extent of how much you have then cross over to HDD or something like that?

My point is in any case, make sure you do some long takes, say about 3mins minimum for 720p24 on a puter that has, say, 2gig of RAM, that should get you past any recording to RAM, thus really testing the HDD.

Again, what ever test you do, observe the screen message on the DV Rack monitor for dropped frames. There is no dropped frame report at the end.

I can't answer your 5400rpm Q.

I hope this isnt too noobish, but i was experimenting with an older compie and yep right enuf with DV rack i was getting the HDD too slow msg, but when i tested it with me mates Edius 4.0 (and used its capture) ability, it recorded fine? Why should that happen ya reckon? Just cos DV racks using more cpu etc? (obviously cos its doing all its monitor functions too?)

DV Rack has alot of monitoring tools, if you have a slow system (like my laptop, it is best to shut off any unnecessary components). Once I have set up the camera, checked the lighting and sound, I shut off the vectorscope etc. and just leave the field monitor and recorder running.
