Ex Picture Profile Thread

Anyone got a good PP for vivid colors? Seams more eazy to get that doomsday feeling than getting happy stoner colors ;)

Are there any Sony Picture Profiles for the EX3...available to download anywhere...?

Are there any Sony Picture Profiles for the EX3...available to download anywhere...?

Who shoots with the EX3 on here? My understanding is the EX1 PP aren't compatible with the EX3...

I agree...I can not understand why Sony doesn't have PP for the EX cams...

I even asked someone at sony and they said the have them on their site...but if I'm not mistaken they are for XDCam HD not EX again not compatible.

Do let me know if anyone has some good PP for EX3...I'd like to try them out.

The settings for the EX1 and EX3 are interchangeable

The color matrixes are vastly different sadly, as I found out after spending an hour or so manually entering ex3 profiles a while back. Came out with some extremely green and blue images.

Just posted my picture profiles on www.skullfilms.se (just head over to the picture section)

Haven´t seen any compariations between all custom set-ups but here is a small sum-up of what i found on the web after 2 month of searching and 2 of my own profiles.

1.Standard
2.Steve Thomas
3.HVX
4.Vivid (my own)
5.ChrisT (my own)
6.Philip Bloom

Nothing touched between the shoot exept PP.

Hahaha! I like #1.Standard the best! (I think you need to shoot a more appropriate subject. Something with some highlights, etc...)

Thanks for doing this.

Haha I know right ;)

Just made it as a refreens in a controled invirovment since im going out for a couple of weeks of shooting now and wanted everything set up before i left.

Also got my first KxR today, 24p/48fps works like a clock.. however 52fps failed after 2 minutes..

Almost like a belive that KxR and 60fps will be fine for shooting snowboard since the clips are so short.. The datarate limit seams to occur after some sort of buffert underun.

Has anyone tried these? How do they look?
I'm just beginning on my PP journey and would like someting "filmic" (damn I promised myself I wouldn't use that term!) without a lot of fussing back and forth with settings.

Someone should give a course, say 3 hour course at local Sony dealer, on how to tweak the EX-1. Hint Hint.

Thanks
Bob

Here are print outs of my settings. All the other settings are set to default. I noted that the detail adjustment is subjective because I just eyeballed the difference. The EX1 is notably sharper even at the lowest level.

Totally agree Bob. I'd pay money for that course, DVD, download... Whatever. I thought the Vortex DVD on the EX1 helped a lot. I was happy to buy it for $100 and have recommended it to others. So I echo your "Hint, Hint, Hint" to somebody!!!!

As I will be using my EX1 underwater as well, does anybody have a suggestion for a ''Underwater" profile?

THX!

Not sure if those hints are for Andy but he actually gives those classes. They are free for some purchases (HPX300 and up, EX3 and up ect.) and DVXusers get sweet deals for other cameras. Not trying to "sell" it but if you really need a class we do offer them in L.A. as well.

just a thought.

Thanks, Gregger. Where on the Abel Cine website are the classes listed or are they by appointment only?

Bob

Hey Bob

Here is a link to our general EX3 class - http://www.abelcine.com/articles/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=296&Itemid=60

The class is free for anyone who bought a EX3 from us. The class covers all the functions of the EX1 as well. We spend an hour or more going over Picture Profiles and making looks.

We also do individual classes for a single person or small group. You can call us and ask for the service department to make an appointment.

I need some further clarification:
Are the detail settings indeed NEGATIVE or is that just a dash in front of the number?

Same with B-G and Black Gamma. and Level...is that neg 30 or just 30?

Also what's the difference between the Cine profiles (V and D) if you were going to describe it to someone just starting out with PPs (me!)

Thanks again
Bob

The setting for factory default is negative 30, ( feedbak please) i believe in the first place, so if you dial it up to 0 you add crispness, that's a no no with ex1/ex3. You can get awful flickering with the detail on. Cool thread btw

Digging deeper into Picture Profiles

Digging deeper into Picture Profiles

ok, i've read every post on this thread/sticky and i still don't know everything there is to know about Picture Profiles(PP). I've made a list of questions about settings within the PP and hope that all of you, much more technical savvy individuals can help me out.

1. Matrix: Level: what does adjusting this do?
Phase: what does this do?

2. Color Correction: does anyone use this? if so, how and why?

3. Detail: I know detail is but i'm unaware of what (level, frequency, crispening, h/v ratio, white limit, black limit, v dtl creation, and knee apt level) are and what they do.

4. Skin Tone Detail: once again, does anyone use this? if so, how and why?

5. Gamma: Level: what does changing the level do? i can see on my monitor that adding/increasing + lightens the image and vice versa for decreasing/subtracting -. but what is it actually, technically doing?

thanks in advance. you guys are great.

-Mike

btw: i made my last payment on my camera/package today!!!! what a relief!!!

1. Matrix-Level = adjusts color saturation
Phase= hue adjustment--rotates through the entire hue range.

2. Correction: allows you to pick a range of colors and change the hue.

3. Detail:
Level: Amount of detail enhancement
Crispening: increasing value decreases sharpening of textures
Frequency: controls the 'fatness' of the detail enhancement range (think of 'radius' in PhotoShop Unsharp mask tool)
H/V ratio allows control over the ratio of sharpening applied in horizontal and vertical direction.
White Limit/Black Limit: sets a Luma threshold beyond which, no detail is applied. (hint, eliminated black halos around bright highlights when set appropriately)
Not 100% sure about the last two, V DTL Creation and Knee APT level--I'll have to look them up again.

4. Skin tone detail: a corellary of the color correction, only replacing hue change with detail change--allows one to pick a range of color (usually skin tone) in which to reduce detail enhancement (sort of 'digital makeup' for smoother faces).

5. Gama level: changes the shape of the transfer curve for contrast information. Mostly affects a broad range of midtones, but leaves black and bright white unaffected.

Congrats on paying off your camera. It's always a good feeling to know the payments are behind you!

thanks Mark. i remember now about hearing what CC does. i believe you can dial in a specific color and make adjustments to that individual color without adjusting the rest of your image colors. hey, in your opinion, what's the big difference between using HiSat and Cinema Matrixes? obviously, the HiSat speaks for itself, but if you were to select Cinema Matrix and bump up the Level would you come closer to the look of a neutral HiSat setting? basically, what do you think Cinema Matrix does to colors. in my own opinion it seems to flatten/;desaturate them. i'm not very tech savvy though, so i'd like to hear what you think.
