Evie - Mark Harris

Mark, really good looking picture. beautiful actress. The guy was great too. hope to see the bigger movie later.

Mark, I'm so glad you were able to share part of your film with us.

Your actors are wonderful. The emotions felt so real and so raw. I was totally sucked in.

I also love what you did with the sound. That droning that grows and then consumes the scene during the climax is fantastic and really quite effective (it reminded of "Irreversible").

One small suggestion/question, there is a moment at 5:06 where the actress turns towards the camera. At first, I thought she was breaking the 4th wall, and then I realized she was looking at the candle, but that first look was a little disconcerting (maybe that's what you intended though).

Still, I really enjoyed this a lot and I can't wait to see the complete and finished version of this film.

Thanks Chris, this is exactly the kind of observations I'm hoping to get out of putting up such a rough version.

And about the drone. That is really something I slapped in last minute as a hint to Herman. My hope is that when he digs into the sound design, his imagination will take that stuff and run wild.

Am swamped with a software work today, but will start watching and commenting tonight!!!

Is it bitchy to say I´m glad you did not finish? :D

No, really I bet that would be first place, thou there are many gems in that fest.
I´m really looking forward to see the whole shabang when you`r done.

Looking at work like that reminds me of how much I still have to learn.

SPOILERS... Ye be warned, mateys!

Some good stuff going on here. As per your request, some unbiased feedback:

The film turns decidedly "LYNCHIAN" (as in Twin Peaks) around the five minute mark. If that was the effect you were going for, definetely nailed it.

Hooked and want to see more.

Awesome. I like the direction you are headed with the color grading (I see now what you were trying to figure out with the keyframing). I wasn't nuts about the the guy's performance at the end - thought he was great for the first four minutes or so), but Evie was amazing.

I want to know so much more about what is going on in that apartment and that character's head. If this is a test for the feature, I'd say you pass. When it is polished, I think you are looking at a very high score.

Mark,

there is something about all of your work, a signature, and it comes through in this piece. I know it's a WIP, but your tone shows through.

I know a lot of this was very improvised, and I'm not a real big fan in this case. I think the emotion and beats of the scene could have been played out with tighter dialog...

Just my opinion.

That having been said, the performances are good, and the look is great. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Thanks for letting us have a sneak peak.

Well, Mark, I could have watched this without knowing who made it, and I'd have known you made it. It's such a work in progress I have a hard time telling you much about it.

The only thing that really jumped out at me was when he's choking her and she looks at the candle. I actually laughed because I got this momentary feeling she was breaking the fourth wall and was expecting her to say something directly to the viewer, the you showed the candle and I understood what was happening...but the damage was already done.

Is this another in your line of Katrina, Constance and now Evie? I look forward to seeing the finished product.

EDIT: after typing this, I went back to see what others had written. I guess Chris and I saw the same thing.

dude, much to say.... but at work now and need time to say more than "good job". but for now ", good job!

more later....

Really solid feel to this one Mark even though it's rough...

Solid, believable performances. Good setup, reveals and tension throughout. I'm engaged yet I have no idea where this is going as it unrolls and I like the strange, bizarre twist which makes us understand just 'why' this guy is still flyin solo...

Cinematography is solid and pro. I like the handheld tone. Nice work, Aram.

I echo some of the sentiments regarding the fourth wall breakage but similarly felt a strange internal twist as she looked at me, 'like I was supposed to do something and stop this guy'... interesting feeling.

Also, like the strange symbol at the end... makes me think there's something so much larger going on and maybe this crazy loon is right :)

I think the 4th wall thing wouldn't feel so abrupt after watching some other scenes in the film together. I have seen a cut with all the scenes and it plays together well after that initial moment. I think that moment is long enough where you have time to readjust back into the story after it cuts to the candle. Once that happens the other moments in the short will feel natural IMO.
Thanks Geoff. Mike cam oped and he kept the frame moving on the moments at the right times. The first take was always a feeler for the blocking but once that was shot the next time he was on point with everything.

Mark, you are definitely treading where I like to go.

Dark, foreboding, uncomfortable and a brief look at why humans are the scariest animals of all. I believe both of your actors gave strong performances; one did not steal the limelight from the other, yet, I felt THOMAS could’ve given a little more in the ‘2nd half.’ The duotone, warm desaturated look is perfect and the candle sequence is quite effective. I personally would have gone as close to the flame as possible and amp up the sound. You obviously know what you have to do with it to give it a finished look with clean sound. In the beginning, there could’ve been less dialogue and a little tighter on some of the cuts. That’s as bad as my critique will get. Let me know when this done. I want to see it.
