EVF SOLUTION (for now...)

Tata,

Just curious, what kind of rig/shoulder mount setup do you have for your F3 in this picture. It looks light and comfortable and I'm assuming the DP4 doesn't hurt you too much with added weight?

As the DP4-EVF users have found out, the supplied HDMI cable is both too short and has a mini-HDMI connector on one end which makes it near useless with an F3, unless you put a nanoFlash between the camera and the EVF.

Question. What kind of HDMI cables can you use? There are several standards. One is the 1.2a spec, another is the 1.3a and the similar 1.3b spec and the other is the more current 1.4 spec that allows for an ethernet signal to travel through the cable. Is there anyone which is a no go with the F3 and the DP4?

Looks like one will have to replace the 1.5' cable with a 3' one and use velcro ties to bundle up the excess.

My F3 is "permanently" attached to Zacuto base plate. That is kinda "base" for my system.
On front, on rails I have Cinevate UNO handles (WINNER!!!), where "ball base" for the handles is on rails all the time and UNO handles get attached when needed. Now, on the shoulder base I have Redrock shoulder pad that is connected to Zacuto base plate with Manfrotto quick release plate (same connection as my Manfrotto tripod head). So, if I need I can mount the camera (on tripod) with shoulder pad system attached or remove it quickly and use it with out.
All together works very smooth and simple. Getting from tripod (only) mode to off shoulder mode takes seconds and no dealing with unscrewing or screwing any parts. Just "click" and tighten...
Great advantage of this set up is that sits on the shoulder and not my puny arms:)...
Weight of the DP4 is miniscule in grand scheme of things...

BTW: When ordering the DP4 or DP4-EVF we offer a variety of mini-HDMI and HDMI-HDMI cables. The current included cable is a 3' Mini-HDMI. The first shipments had the 1.5' Mini-HDMI. Sorry it did not meet your needs.

I should be receiving my smallHD DP4 on Thursday! I'm so excited. I'm gaga over the DP6, so the DP4 should be equally awesome.

I will be sure to give a thourough report on it.

Can't wait to hear about Timur, it seems like it's having a wee little HD broadcast monitor right at your eyecup while shooting...

Oh and also let me take this opportunity to slam Cineroid. There service is non-existent. I don't know if they exist anymore.... hmm, dp4 by an american company is looking pretty good...

I've seen the SDI Cineroid on their twitter page and some saying they just got theirs in the mail. I think they are starting in Europe first, then headed to US. But ya, otherwise there is no one home at the moment...

Judging by the build quality of the DP6, I. Have full faith in the DP4. I can't wait for Thursday to get here.

I just picked up the new Metal SDI Cineroid EVF. After using the first Cineroid and having major issues with HDMI I would never consider any EVF with HDMI. I'm sure some other companies will offer SDI at some point but for right now the Cineroid Metal EVF is a better choice for me.

How did you get it? Are they out for sure. Get in US? Need it bad. Is it working out?

Guess I will be using the dp6 on sLog shows.

Perhaps there will be a future sdi version.

Hi Michael. I guess it is now the only game in town for users wanting HDSDI I/Os. How heavy is the Cineroid Metal EVF? Does it have a mounting hole on the top of is that bottom only as on the plastic one? Happy with the picture quality and features?

Thanks for your feedback. Take care,

T.

Wow, thanks for the warning. Seems awfully delicate for a piece of professional gear. I've never had anything like that happen in 20 years of camera work.

Is anyone having trouble using glasses with the DP4? I just received mine, and my glasses are making contact with the eyepiece. Not sure I can live with it.

That is very unfortunate about burning a hole in the screen... I think it is imperative that everyone who gets an EVF get a mount that will allow you to easily reposition the EVF like you can with the purpose built ones designed for ENG cams and the EX3. You have to be able to re-angle the EVF with a relatively simple hand movement, ideally done with the tap of a hand. I was operating all day with a tripod yesterday & the day before with one a single stage extended and the SmallHD EVF pointing straight up. Should I have been outside I could have had the same problem as David.

Wore glasses the whole time and did not have an issue with the glasses grazing the planar glass the eyecup sits over. The eyewear was close but not touching although at one point I did try to force my the glasses in as far as I could to see if the clarity improved. It didn't. They are not the big aviator style glasses but the more modern looking rectangular lenses which as quite a bit smaller height wise allowing for more maneuverability when peering into the eyecup. Just mentioning this in case the lens size of the glasses are part of the issue.

I still stand by my effusive "first look" comments I made earlier in the week about the SmallHD EVF. The business about the soft focus around the edges is most predominant on the upper left hand side. They are obviously pushing the magnification to the very extent they can before focus vignetting occurs. I think they made the right call. The subjective sizing of the image through the EVF is ideal in my view. The image looks massive without looking over magnified. I have become a fan of their "focus assist" as opposed to peaking. I found that I could operate without peaking and switch briefing to focus assist when my eyes were playing tricks after many hours of shooting.

It should also be brought to people's attention that there is a power adapter plug smack between the two battery mounts on the back. SmallHD sells some very affordable P-Tap (D-Tap) cables so those into the Anton Bauer ecosystem can take advantage of this without having to get some custom wiring work done on the monitor. A shout out to SmallHD for providing this power adapter jack... something that Zacuto consciously decided not to do with the Z-finder EVF.

Don't forget to turn down the contrast and the brightness on the monitor before you go out on a shoot. The default setting on the EVF is a LOT brighter than it should be. Fortunately you have a quick reference with the LCD that will be sitting right below the EVF. I would bang off a few test clips and make sure you have it adjusted properly.

And don't forget to get the right HDMI cable with full size HDMI plugs on both ends. The 3' length is a bit long bit the closest size one can get without getting a custom cable.
