EVERYTHING'S EVENTUAL: A Stephen King short story adaptation (Production Diary)

Not that you asked for it, but here is my critique of your trailer.

As a member of the "uneducated masses" who has never read the short story, the trailer definitely has piqued my interest.

However, I'm still a little short on exactly what the movie is about. Who is skipper and why does he need to be eliminated? I'm sure that gets answered, and maybe there's a reason that it's a secret, but I wouldn't have minded to just see what he looks like for a moment in the trailer. I like the sci-fi-ish-ness with the pre-cog, post-cog part. But, I'm still lost as to whether this is going to be a drama, or action, or whatever.

Imagine I saw this trailer and I decided I wanted to go see it at my local movie theater. So, I call up a friend and tell him I want to go see "Everything's Eventual". He asks, "What's it about?". I reply with, "Some guy gets a job at some spooky corporation that deals with telepathic, mental, sci-fi stuff." And then I don't know anything else.

My only critiques for your trailer. Just so you can have a totally unbiased opinion.

Okay. Now that the critique is over, I can shower you with praise. Everything I have seen thus far looks awesome. The screen grabs look great, and I would definitely be down to check out a fellow DVX'er's film. I hope that I'll get to see this eventually what with the usual unavailablity of dollar baby films.

Best of luck to you, and I hope that SK gets a look at this and will be impressed.

Sweet! I know King is a big fan of films! If you guys nail it, I'm sure he'll throw you some sort of bone! Looks like your on your way.

How was it shooting with the red?

Thanks for your thoughts and comments! What you got from the trailer was almost exactly what we wanted you to get (good eyes on that). All we wanted to establish was pretty much what you said: "Some guy gets a job at some spooky corporation that deals with telepathic, mental, sci-fi stuff." It is just meant to get you interested and tell you "Mr. Sharpton's" side of things. And, if you want to see Skipper (besides seeing the movie :cheesy:) he is right at where Sharpton starts saying: "Our goal is to get rid of all the Skippers of the world..." And the "secret" foor skipper that we don't disclose in not why he get's eliminated but HOW (it is the basis for the entire movie as I hope you will be able to see!)

For the most part this film is a drama with a could lower key action scenes. Just to answer your other comment.

Thanks for the review, you actually said almost everything I wanted people (who don't know the story) to get from the trailer: Dinky get's recruited by the mysterious Transcorp which deals with various kinds of physics.

I really hope you get the chance to see this at a festival or somethiing!

That's our plan! To make a really solid movie that King wants us to do something more with.

RED still has a couple stability issues, most of which we were able to avoid. But the picture quality is out of this world! Shooting an 8 megapixel still once over 24 seconds is so totally "eventual". And the Raw files mean we can adjust and tweak a ridiculous amount in post for color and exposure. I loved having the opportunity to shoot RED and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Wow, great to see that everything goes so well!!!
I did read the short story, so I already know what the movie's about.
The trailer does its job, which is trying to get people interested.

I agree on the goal being met on the part of the trailer in peaking interest. Obviously, I am as close to the material as Ed McMahon is to saying, "Heeeeere's Swayze" (eew, too soon?!)...but I have gotten trailer feedback from many with zero carnal knowledge of the property that showed me "they got it".

That being said, it is a different type of story, to say the very least. I equate it to the vagueness of those first teasers/trailers of Forrest Gump back in '94. I heard people saying,
"I gotta see that"
"Well, what is it about?!"
"I...don't know, but I gotta see it"

!!!UPDATE!!! August 10th 2009

Hey Guys,

Here's an update:

Things have been taking a little longer than expected (no surprise there, we are a movie:) ) But, we are making very good progress. Today was a busy day and I met with the composer, sound mixer and digital animators.

The composer is doing a great job in a short amount of time and he wants to have the music for the film done in about 2 weeks.

The sound mixer and I are scheduling the last bits of ADR and are making plans for the design of several scenes. Since sound will be the last part of this film it bares the new completion date for the film which is September 19th 2009. A little past my hopes but the project will only be better for it (I am still very pleased with the film's proposed 14 month turn around from permission from King to completion!)

The digital animators will be handling a couple shots where we need some flies in a window. Hopefully you will not be able to tell between the real flies and the digital ones!

As for the other departments, the digital computer interface animations are coming along very nicely. The compositing for these shots are moving forward in an equally pleasing fashion. I now see the scale of our 80+ interface shots over 30 of which are being composited onto green screened computer monitors!

I am still in awe of the production process, even for a feature of this scale. It is amazing how much work is done in post production and I can see why so many indie productions get caught up in it. I am very thankful for all of the hardworking individuals who are making this movie possible there is no way it could have been done this without you guys!

So it looks like we are about 3-4 weeks out from having the entire picture, picture elements and score done. And then an extra couple weeks for sound. Like I said the new completion date is set at September 19th 2009 and a private screening for all those involved will be held soon there after.

Thanks for your support and make sure to check out the trailer and show it to others either on our site: www.EverythingsEventualTheMovie.com or on you tube at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCEygOJ1Eac. Please tell your friends and/or post links on facebook (J.P. Scott is my name if you want to friend me) to help us generate some excitement for this first feature length Stephen King Dollar Baby film!

September 19th 2009.Funny how everything comes down to 19 eventually... :)

Good to see everything is going smoothly... I still can't wait to see it!

J.P., I've got a friend request pending for you at Facebook... If you have more info, I'd love to add it on the Dutch fanclub-website!

Finished up the score this morning. From start to finish about a month! Kudos to you Sid. Currently, without the title sequence, end credits and one other scene (all which are being done by my brother) the score stands at about 50 minutes. There is a lot of music in this thing and it is all very good (IMO).

We have had to split up some of the effects work (mainly composting) to make sure we hit our deadline and that seems to be a good idea.

So the big things that are left are: 30+ composite shots (computer screen replacements), 2 Visual Effects shots, 1 Title sequence, 1 Credit sequence, Color Correction, sound mixing and a little bit of ADR which is being recorded tomorrow.

Getting there!!!

Alright, first time here...and this DB simply looks INCREDIBLE! I've been part of the organization of a Dollar Baby festival in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2006 (Julie Sands, producer and main actress in Stephen King's Gotham Cafe attended) and saw more than 20 different dollar babies. This one looks simply way beyond all the others!

I'm really looking forward to see more of it!

I just checked out the trailer. It intrigued me. Looks like you did a great job with this Stephen King short story. Must have been hard to flesh it out to feature length. But they did it with 1408 with good result so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Best of luck!
