Hola guys,

let me start sayng i don't have Photoshop and i don't know how it works even if i'm a video guy....
The other day i was shooting a video and happened to me to shoot a couple of pictures with the D7000 in the flat profile (Samuel created i think). Now i ask you: How can i recover the pictures taken with that profile? I'm using Nikon NX and playinng a little with saturation and contrast but it seems to not achieve any good result. What would you suggest me to recover the pics?
Thank u so much

If u shoot as RAW those photos it dont matter what picture profile u got when u shoot, u can mod the as u please. If u shoot as Jpeg then its differend situation.. Shoot RAW always ;)

important pictures?
download Gimp, it's a free Photoshop-derivat, and than try to multiply the stuff with itself in a new layer.

Otherwise, e.g. not so important pics, just through 'em away. :-)

But why didn't you use your normal workflow?

---
and yeah, always raw

Guys i shot in Jpeg..... I was shooting a video but they asked me to take a couple of important pictures...and that's it!
I usually go back to the menu and set the normal profile instead of the flat profile, but because was a quick action i didn't have the time so i shot! :)

yeah, there's a reason why a lot of folks always shoot jpg + raw, even if they will normally never look at the raws nowadays. :-)
Because s+++ happened.

Regarding your pictures, 'multiply' is still the answer.
If they are very, very important, show them.

sry, got nothing.

So, assuming this is important for you and no one should know, too, plse shoot just another example with the same problem and post it here, you see?
And let's hope you had not dialed down image quality of this jpgs down to small/basic. :-)

If you are able to color correct and grade a video shot with those flat custom settings, you should be able to do the same with a jpg. Just follow the still-image equivalent of whatever you do to your video images. Actually, if it allows for custom resolutions, you can even load the image into your editor and work there if that's all you know how to use.

This happens to me all the time. But unless I'm doing time lapse, I always have JPEG+Raw variant activated.

I also assign the profile settings to my custom menu with my most-used stuff. This is a fantastic feature, especially if you shoot video and stills.

"Multiply" may help, but I'd think some levels or curves would be better. All my Flaat footage starts with levels or the 3-way, it's really more about boosting density and highlights to gain contrast and saturation.

Michael glad i'm not alone on this :)

Just keep raw turned on and it's a moot point, unless you're supposed to deliver hundreds of JPEGs. In which case you'd be setup for stills vs. video anyway.

I've never shot time lapse raw, but if it were a paying gig with really wide DR I suppose AE or Resolve could handle it.

Hell, I have a sticker on my big video cam with "FRAME RATE!!!" in sharpie - hard enough to remember to ask myself what rate I'm supposed to deliver in!

haha, I had a very BIG STICKER on my F90x: CHECK +/- CORRECTION

and yeah, that was analogue times. And was there for a reason - I once forgot to reset a -2 correction with slide film during an invitation by a touristbuero; several days happy shooting lost... completly lost :-(

@ Michael: you are right with graduation, but that's often the last step for me as it is a global change; often you need to recover area for area seperately. there is no magic one button solution :-))

@ TO: Did you more photos? One important protagonist has the eyes closed - send 'em all :-))

It's completely fine. I always shoot jpegs in Cinestyle on purpose, it gives me a flat image with the most dynamic range so that I can grade it later. It's the same concept as we do in video. In fact, these flat profiles work BETTER in stills mode than in video, as stills are 12-18-20 megapixel 4:2:2 8 bit files that are VERY robust while video is 2 megapixel H.264 4:2:0 bit images, that are very fragile.

Just grade the Flaat image and you should be able to get a pleasing image, if you can't, post the files and I willing to help.

Most Nikons come with NX View that can convert or edit files from Nikon. There is also Picasa (FREE) from Google, Gimp (already mentioned) and for video there is DaVinci Resolv Lite (also free).
