EVA-1 Super16 window mode?

Finally saw an EVA1 in the flesh. Very nice little camera. The compact size reminded me a little of the old Arri 16M and BL and I thought what a great setup it would be if the EVA had a Super16 window mode that allowed RAW and compressed format recording (maybe to an Odyssey?).

Mitch, are you out there?

What kind of resolution would you even get out of that mode based on the sensor size/resolution?

Based on 5.7k raw horizontal resolution about 2.5k. Good enough for solid 2k/1080p.
I would find that useful too. Similar to what I get out my Bolex. Add a c-mount or PL adapter and you can use some really nice fast wide range zooms.
Harry and I both like the aesthetics and practicality of the format.
Red 2k 16:9 format in raw would be nice. Well supported in NLE's.

I have a set of s16 primes sitting idle and something in the area of 2.5k RAW would be perfect.

s35 5.7k RAW would be a massive amount of data, if you are shooting anything of length. A s16 RAW mode would be a good alternative. Keep in mind that Alexa RAW is 2.8k and countless features are shot at that resolution.

s16 also has a somewhat unique look.

The EVA1 already has a windowed mode for 4K, which takes the scanned area of the sensor down to 4/3-size. Much bigger still than Super16, it's about halfway between Super16 and Super35.

Not what you folks are asking for, but pointing out that it's sort of a little bit along the way of what you want, and it already exists.

Sure, I saw that it has a 4k M43 mode, but it's an oddball format in the movie / TV world not being s35 or s16.

Also rather selfishly I have a s16 set of lenses that wouldn't work with the M43 mode.

What Barry says. You get a m43 equivalent crop window of the sensor that outputs RAW and it exists via firmware update in about a week :)

The M43 mode is helpful in keeping the file size down, but now you're dealing with the M43 crop factor on s35 lenses.

Also as I mentioned I have a set of s16 primes and the M43 mode is of no use for them. It would be nice to have a s16 window mode that supports RAW in an industry standard format (movies, TV, commercials.)

The nice thing about the EVA sensor is that it's s35 @ 5.7k. A s16 window would still give you a very useable DCI 2k image with a little extra resolution for stabilization (circa 2.3k) etc.

I agree that a s16mm window mode would be great. The Varicam LT has it, so it is not an outrageous request. And whilst at it please add 1.3x, 1.5x & 2x anamorphic desqueeze. In all modes. Yes sir.

If they were to make an S16 window, it would be about 2.9k resolution. Then you'd still have the problem of the EF mount to cope with. You could maybe go with the Wooden Camera PL conversion, which would then let you use Super16 PL lenses, but you're not going to get C-mount lenses on the camera.

I have a set of s16 Zeiss Super Speeds mk III and would need to get the PL mount from Wooden Camera.

2.9k s16 window with RAW would be incredible and certainly put me on the buyer / renter list.

I'd be happy with PL mount. Stick something like an Angie 7-81 on it, or 11.5-138.

If they made it use a very slightly narrower window (2.8k) then -- theoretically, they've already got the processing in there to handle windowed modes and 2.8k sensor scanning so ... perhaps this is not entirely a pipe dream... certainly seems like something that could be done. As to whether they will, that's another question, but it seems like something we can at least ask them to consider.

Sounds totally possible and it would give Panasonic the only small body sub $10k s16 option out there, especially if they supported RAW. There is a lot of s16 glass out there sitting idle and 2.8k allows one to shoot RAW with a manageable file size.

The FS5 has a s16 mode, but it's compressed (xdcam) only and HD.

F5/F55/Alexa Mini/ Scarlet etc have a s16 mode, but are in a whole different price category and most are HD only..

I have several vintage s16 zooms that I’ve owned for years, Eclair CA-1, Arri std and Aaton mount. I had two converted to MFT to use on my BMD Pocket and Micro cameras. I love that they’re parfocal and relatively fast long zooms (T2.8). I also like the legacy filmic look. Unfortunately not everyone agrees with me. In this day of 4,6 and 8K, the standard now is tooth-rattling resolution. I intensely dislike the auto zooms, like the 24-105 and 17-55 Canon lenses I have and use regularly, but I’ve reached a point where I’m tired of fighting that battle, and I don’t want to spend $30+O00 on the huge, heavy manual lenses that are available...

However, that said, if I could convert them to EF and use them on my EVA I’d do it for my own satisfaction...

Technically those of you with PL mount glass don't need to wait, you could use them right now with the 4K windowed mode. You'd just be dealing with monitoring issues and the need to crop in post. Which is not as nice a solution, but for the time being it's possible.

Well, if you don't mind buying used, you can find F5's for under $10K and it'll shoot 1080/2K is "s16" mode and also 2K RAW with the R5/R7(just saw a few used R5's for under $1700).

So yeah, roxics is exactly right. Use it as is, and crop in post, the results will be identical to what they would be if Panasonic made a specific mode for it.

Only thing you'd be missing out on is smaller file sizes, but that shouldn't be a drastic difference, it would be double I guess, but not 4x. Well, that and framing, but at least you can experiment right now and see if the results would be worthwhile.
