Error: Out of Memory

Working in FCP. Importing some clips. First message I got was "Error: Out of Memory" whenever I tried to Save. Rebooted. Imported the clips again and it froze. Rebooted. Imported clips again "corrupted clips" message followed by the "Error: Out of Memory" when I tried to save again--which I know is not true. Anyone else with this problem? Any thoughts?

Using Power Mac G4 quad (2.5 ghz), Running os10.4.7, FCP 5.0.4, shot on 720 HD using the hvx200 (24p). Do you need more?

I would immediately trash your final cut pro plist file in the user/library/preferences folder, and relaunch.

Reset your preferences.

Is there a reason why you are capturing to an external? And what type of the drive is it, brand and interface?

I am not sure I understand "Brand" or "interface." I have built a tower of hard drives and "Raided" (is that the correct term?) them together so they act as one drive. Been working flawlessly for last 6 months.

I ran into the dreaded "out of memory" issue for the first time a few days ago, this after four years of FCP use.

I wasn't importing P2 clips, however, so maybe the cause of the problem in my case was not the cause of your problem.

After much freaking out and reading of various 'net posts on the subject, I figured out that my problem was likely that my project file had grown too big and bloated for FCP to manage (I forget the actual figure, but I think it was around 200MB). The solution that worked for me was saving the project file as a new project file ("Save as" command), then deleteing a bunch of the numerous sequences within the project that had built up over the course of editing, a purging which knocked the project file back down to a more manageable size of 160MB or so, and eliminated the "out of memory" issue.

There are apparently a bunch of other issues that can cause an "out of memory" message, but that's what worked for me. Hope this helps.

With what interface?

SCSI, firewire, eSATA, SDI, fiber channel?

And have you trashed the plist file and relaunched to reset your scratch/media drives?
