Error Message: Too Many Targets. Please help!

Im posting this problem here as well in other areas because I really need an answer. Here's the scoop: Im trying to offload P2 for the 1st time.

I just ran through the section on HVX Bootcamp for offloading to HDD. Im doing everything exactly right; connecting camera and HDD through fire wire, setting camera to 1394 host, etc. But when the menu comes up, all options are unavailabe, including the option to format HDD. The only option that is available is the "Verify" option.

And then I receive the Warning Message: Too Many Targets. Turn Power off.

I looked up this warning the panasonic manual. It defines the warning as: There are too many 1394 connection destinations

Im using a Western Digital 320 GBHDD

Im pretty much screwed if i cant start offloading my P2 cards soon.

If its just about downloading through the cam, why not using USB2?

You can change the connection in the menue of the HVX (probably set to FW rght now!?)....that should make the job...i guess you got some problem with the FW connection at your computer, as there is mostly just one "real" port...good luck..!

according to what Ive been reading, you can only verify a transfer when you go through fire wire. Verification is important to me.

Im getting very frustrated...this is a basic operation..is something wrong with the camera?

Do you have a smaller drive to test that with?

Wild guess is that the drive formatted by the cam would create more partitions than are supported

Should I buy a smaller HDD? I dont understand the connection between 320GB HDD and too many partitions. I thought 15 partitions was the limit no matter how big the HDD was.

Hi Chris,

Any help?

Having looked all over (ie: Google and being thrown to DVX user, CreativeCow, etc) and finding no thoughts, mine are this:

I tried doing this with a 1TB Western Digital drive to no avail. I have two HVX's for a shoot I'm doing at Harvard this week, and last minute we decided we needed something quick and dirty to dump to, or at least as an additional backup.

I did what everyone seems to: Checked the ports, checked the cables, still no dice - I keep getting the "Too Manny Targets - Turn off the device." Looking up the error code in the manual, it simply says "There are too many 1394 Connection Destinations."

So I have a smaller Maxtor drive sitting in here that belongs to a friend and is backing up some random footage. I dumped it and tried it, and it worked.

To look at the drive, I'm not sure I'm correct on this, but my thought is that the 1TB WD drives are physically two drives internally. Thus, even though the software says it's one drive, physically the camera is seeing it as two, and doesn't know where to send the data.

Sounds too simple, maybe it is. But this makes the most sense based on the error code.

Panasonic, I love you, but you could be slightly more clear on your error codes descriptions. :)

Hope this helps - if you try another drive that you can confirm as a single physical drive, let me know.

Best,

P
