Hi

I have just purchased a HMC151.

Can anyone recommend;
best tripod,
cam light,
mic I should buy.
Pref second hand or as cheap as possible.

also - has anyone got any info help notes on the hmc150

Cheers all.

OK, I'll probably get slammed here, but since you were looking for low cost...

While I generally prefer the highest quality tripods/gear.... What I could afford was another story, so I went with a $177 USD E117 off ebay. Made in china. Works pretty good. I did have a problem with the first head but they replaced it right away.

I also bought a mic out of HK. Originally it was to be temporary but I was so impressed by the sound quaity I didn't bother buying anything "better". The mic is a HTDZ HT-320A "Super Uni-Directional Electret Condesor Microphone" (Shotgun).

No, Electret is not a spelling error. It's a type of mic design. This one is switchable from "Tele" to "Normal" modes and is powered by a 1.5v batt or phantom power.

I paid $50 USD to Canada and that was with express shipping.

A caveat about HK products. It can be hit or miss on what products are good and which are bad. (NEVER by a HK SDHC card for example - they are 99.9999% of the time fakes).

I saw both of the above recomended by other DVX users in the past so I gave them both a shot. I have also bought light kits that were of good quality, but I did my research first before buying.

Oh and as for notes on the HMC150. Get a decent set of SDHC cards. There's been a rash of dead cards lately so I'm still not sure what to buy anymore, though the pricey sandisk's seem to be a good bet - they are also 3 times the price of most other brands. My OCZ 16gb class 6's seem to be working well.

Best cheap tripod? How do you recommend that? We have a Sachtler and that is one piece of equipment that cheap and good don't intersect.

Hey Centralpark, There is a bunch of posts on this all ready, especially tripods... I suggest doing a search or 2.

That being said, I would go with a BARE minimum of a good used (new $350+) bogen on ebay for around $200+

Tripod is usually the 2nd biggest purchase when starting out with a basic setup, 1st being the camera.

Hi, I wanted to ask if anyone knew if the "htdz ht-320A microphone" is a Stereo mic or not? I know the mic says "Super uni-directional condenser microphone" does that mean it is Mono?

Cheers, maomao.

Hi Denwa, I saw your post about the mic you bought from Hong Kong. Do you know if the htdz ht-320A microphone is a Stereo mic?

Cheers, maomao.

Tripods are a personal thing, and it's hard to recommend one over the other unless you have specific things in mind. For instance, do you want a floor spreader or 'not' want a floor spreader?

How high do you need it to go? Some of mine go to 6 feet, others to 8 feet high. Some tripods I would have loved to buy only go to about 5 feet and this wasn't high enough for my needs. :(

Microphones are something you should not skimp too much on. You don't need to spend thousands and thousands, but check out Rode and Sennheiser for starters. The Rode NTG series have served me very well. A cheap Mic and good camera is about as good as a good Mic and cheap camera. Audio is at least 50% of video.

Regarding tripods, I have the satchler fsb4 bought in cvp (uk) and i must say I'll never look back or regret spending 700€ on it. The quality I great and handles the hmc with accesories perfectly. Other than that look for the rode line of mic, I have the ntg2 and I'm really happy with it.
I also got the genus mattebox and the genus backpack (great backpack for 100€).

Now go enjoy it!

Pd: budget for good sdhc cards, after all that's where all your footage will go. Buy Panasonic or high speed sandisk.
