EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...Announcement

Looks like it will be good camera for the money. Out of my price range now. Maybe in another year or two?

I guess the next big one to hear more info about will be the 2/3 fixed-lens Scarlet.

Hopefully this year is the right one. While i'd never shell out 13k for an f3 (which i like quite a biT) or other "temp" 1080p cameras, i'm really looking forward to this one.

The only thing I'm getting from this is more delays for the S35 Scarlet now the epic-s .... 5/6 more dam months before we might see any Epic-S's in the wild.

With the small numbers of cameras they will produce they will almost certainly be on backorder no matter how long they wait. They could delay it 4 more times and people would be furious, but when they see one for sale they would still buy it.

It's the small size of this company that allows it to get away with stuff like this. The 2/3s Scarlett seems behind the times no matter the specs. The world has moved on to large sensors like it or not.

What they should do is make that 2/3s into a bomb diggity 1080p camera with awesome low light ability and make it cheap enough for the every man.

I highly doubt they even go through with the 2/3rds fixed lens scarlet. Just doesn't seem like it's even worth the hassles at this point. By the time they get a production line running, I would guess there's going to be better cams by the bigboys that will compete. Just think, we might have 16k on the t2i tonight. lollollol

Yes I mean't last year, 2011 is still weird to me. That being said RED has said (and I know that does mean a lot) that the 3K Scarlet is still alive. As far as Scarlet being outdated when it ships I think that is a little far fetched, their will still be a market for it and it will compete. Just like the EX-1 will continue to compete.

It should compete with the EX1. There is so much they could do with a 2/3s 1080p chip that would have made it the "go to" HD camera. Making it higher than HD resolution is just waste with a chip that size IMO. RED Scarlett takes over HD could have been the phrase of the day or something like that.

According to specs released earlier it should have a 1080 option and being able to finish in 1080 from 3K is not a bad thing. Either way these are exciting times, I might pick up a AF100 and a Scarlet. I play no favoritism I just want tools to create with, that being said I also like to put the facts out there and not just opinion.

I've haven't played with one so hell if I know. I just feel if they had focused on 1080p, building everything from the ground up to do that. It could have just blown everything away. It might still do that but being able to shoot in 3k on a small chip like that, what would it be for? The big screen? Doubt it.

Just thinking out loud really.

I understand where your coming from the great thing is we have options! And whether anyone likes RED or not they have helped the industry and us visual artists by pushing the limits.

Downscaling 3k to 1080 will result in a cleaner, sharper image than an image captured with a 1080 sensor (You'll even be able to shoot straight to 1080 RGB instead of 3k RAW if that's would you'd rather edit). And given the MX technology's performance, I don't think you have to worry about low light performance.

The F3 I believe has a 3.5 chip so maybe it will all work the same. The NXcam will have that same chip and we already know the F3 is amazing in low light. That doesn't mean much right now through Sony could very well cripple the NX to protect sales of the F3. I hope not though.

It's a bayer sensor, so had they made it just 1080p, it wouldn't even resolve full HD. 3k on the other hand...that'll downscale to a very nice fully-resolved 1080p image.

I understand that but the final output is not focused on 1080p. If they had not tried to output 3k maybe they could have made it even cheaper, or who knows maybe they could have it do 500FPS or whatever? Just a thought.
