EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...Announcement

Funny since RED said they never made any prosumer equipment.

If we consider the old Scarlet S35 frame as prosumer... Scarlet is amateur!

Jim is really heavy on the contradictions lately... PR to the rescue!

Ummm, I think your understanding of what he said is a bit off. The entire point of moving the S35 Scarlet to the Epic line is that it isn't a prosumer camera because they don't make prosumer cameras.

I think Pietro's point was that if Jannard said they moved the Scarlet S35 frame to the Epic frame to get away from "Prosumer", what does that make the Scarlet 2/3rds?

Well, anything well below 10k it's bound to fall into "prosumer' waters whaterver they call it so or not : )

Red fanaticism seems to fall into several categories:

1. People who fawn over the camera but can't afford it and defend it to the death.
2. People who fawn over the camera but can't afford it and spout every post by Jannard as gospel when it's "subject to change"
3. People who can afford the product and/or own it and who treat it as the only viable option and treating everything else as inferior.
4. People who sound like marketing brochures.
5. People who have nothing better to do than philosophize about the revolution of digital filmmaking but have not the talent to actually make films.
6. Jannard's provocative rhetoric.

Sorry, haven't had my coffee yet. The boards have definitely changed. There's a lot of this silliness and it gets tiresome. We are losing a lot of filmmakers on this board and we are definitely dealing with a large influx of techocrats. This board has always been geared towards the technical, what has changed is that in the past the technical discussion was geared towards actual filmmaking and not technique for technique's sake.

People need to stop using this place as a soapbox to attack or defend Red products. Start blogs, that's where it belongs. Or take this discussion to Reduser, that's a forum dedicated to the camera. This is just tiresome and it's the dead horse of 2010.

Come on Issac, this is an absurd over generalization. Where is your category for two ASC's raving about using Epic?

They moved the S35 to the Epic frame for two apparent reasons, to accomodate the extra boards and processing for HDRx and to get it into production sooner since it will be built on the same production line as Epic-X and that will be the first line up and running.
Other than the fact it still falls in the under $10k "prosumer" market space, I don't think it suggests anything at all about Scarlet 2/3".

and now, seriously- what do you plan to do with a scarlet ? what kind of shooting? do you have some uploaded 16mm footage from old times?

Oh my! Where to begin? First up will be testing the camera with all of my lenses, both charts and some nature and urban beauty shots just to learn the camera and to share how it performs with vintage 16mm glass. I have a dramatic short I want to shoot inspired and bookended by a Tom Waits song, but I need to see if I can get the rights to it first. Won't really work without that. Looking into shooting some experimental fine art stuff for display on digital picture frames. Probably find a few paying gigs to help offset the cost of the camera.
I want to shoot a documentary on the effects of climate change on the southern Appalachian rainforests. We are more than 25 FEET short of normal long term rainfall averages for the last ten years. Another decade like the last and more than a third of the species uniquely native to the Blue Ridge National Forest will likely be extinct. I've lost ten 60 to 70 year old red oaks to drought off my two acres since 2007.

Everytime I want a RED I just go to the REDuser forums and remember these are the people I will have to go to for advice and the feeling passes. :)

What Red should have said, if they actually knew how to market in the internet age (i.e. not strategies from selling sunglasses in the 70's), is that they are not in the "label" business. They should just stated something like "We don't like labels. The terms "professional" and "prosumer" have no merit in this day and age. We just make cameras."

Intead they just make crazy statements and have to end up eating their words every 3 months or so. Plus, thanks to their "professionals only" motto, we have a bunch of a-holes taking out second mortgages on their homes, buying and Red Ones, and then running around the internet shooting nothing more than test-charts and then bashing everyone else who isn't "professional".

I think this sums up the pro thing well:

Dear Razz16mm, I see contradiction in your logic, you say you can afford to wait - See? While you're waiting for S-camera - species are dying! Don't wait - dear Mr. Razz - make your own camera - I think your techno background would be helpful in this endeavor. I'm serious.

I myself electronically illiterate - but will try to adapt 2/3" B&W machine vision camera for cine use - since I think in B&W anyway - and near infrared sensitivity is a bonus. And anamorphic adapters suddenly make sense with near square sensor. That, and also all those 16mm lenses I bought inspired by your collection.

So wait? The S35 Scarlettt that they "said" would be around $8k for the brain is bye bye? You've got to be kidding? I'm sure this Epic-S is going to be way for cost for now so it looks like there's no RED in my near future cause I'm not ordering the 2/3 model. I guess I'll just wait 2-3 years for Panasonic's lower cost S35 cam... it's bound to happen like the Sony F3.
