GH3 EOSHD reviews the pre-production firmware GH3

That actually makes him a less legitimate reviewer - in fact it calls into question his impartiality in a major way.

The fact is that he has shown himself to not be knowledgeable in nor experienced with cinema cameras and has been willing to post nearly anything to gain more hits for his blog. His professional experience in camera work was exactly nil before he started blogging about it, yet that has never stopped him from posting authoritatively on the subject - often with laughable errors and misstatements.

No, he is not legitimate at all. I find it amazing that people give him any credence.

Not to disagree with you, but I honestly do not agree with you. Andrew is doing a great job and has an excellent eye for art. I think his vimeo channel and videos are very nice and create inspiration. Doesn;t matter if you've been doing this for 20 years or just started today, the love and passion is shown in what you do and I feel Andrew is a great person for this art we love.

I dont like andrew but i applaud his reviews. At least theyre real compared to his opinion which is purely fictional.
he just needs to stay away from making bs rumor and stick with reviewing

The evidence is mounting that the GH3 video uses line skipping, which inevitably results in moire and a significant loss of measured resolution. That's not something that can be fixed in firmware, by adding a stronger OLPF, or by providing a super-high bitrate codec. It's the sad consequence of marketing-style decision making. They took the one feature that made the GH1 and GH2 a success, and removed it from the GH3 so they could compete against the OM-D in stills (similar sensor) and in video (better codec). But by making the GH3 more similar to the OM-D, they lost the one market advantage that the GH1/2 had versus all other still cameras, including those with larger sensors. Now someone looking for the best stills will pick a camera with a larger sensor (APS-C or full frame). Someone looking for good stills in a small form factor will pick the OM-D for the 5-axis IBIS or the RX100 for best sensor/size ratio. Someone looking for the best video will pick a camcorder. And someone looking for a stills camera with the best video will be presented with a list of very similar choices and no clear winner.

If a camera isn't using a sensor that has the same resolution as it is outputting. With the exception of the new C100/C300/C500 series. It will absolutely be using line-skipping, unless they are doing what Canon is doing, and I doubt they are, considering the resolution of the cameras sensor, and the resolution of the files being output. The only other option is raw output.

He was the first guy keeping things simple on the GH2 hacking world when I got one in 2011. Everyone else on Personal View was making it incredibly obtuse and inpenatrable for the 'noobs'.
Andrew made it simple to understand.
So for that I thank him.

I enjoy visiting Andrew's site. Usually he breaks the news before most bloggers do.

His opinions may not be shared by all, and he might get some things wrong. But hey... he isn't perfect. Who is?

The impartiality clause is completely correct. Having dinner with Panasonic execs and praising the cams just makes everything he says suspect. It's like a game reviewer getting free flights and booze with EA execs. There was actually a huge falling out in the gaming world recently about this, http://www.vg247.com/2012/10/31/doritosgate-after-the-storm-lets-clean-ourselves-up/

Without ethics, the whole things becomes PR.

Let's see, he dismissed the 5d mark III (which featured no aliasing but a soft image. Also with an all-i codec) claiming Canon is holding back and praised the GH3 (which has actually gone completely backwards from the GH2 with more aliasing and also a softer image than the GH2). And now is sitting with Panasonic execs.

Talking about bloggers, Philip Bloom is way better because he does actual reviews and uses the cams professionally. Not these half-assed "I pointed the camera at some flowers and asked "difficult" questions!"-type stuff.

The only thing Andrew does well is breaking news quite fast.

Why can't I get info/opinion on the GH without the Youtube-like mind-numbing comments whenever EOSHD is mentioned?

Seriously, when EOSHD is mentioned on DVX, the bitches come out slapping and yapping. The bitchfest is getting old and reflects poorly on otherwise I;m sure consummate professionals. EOSHD is a blog and is opinion useful to many, and the guy seems passionate about what he does. The hatred expressed borders on jealousy and pathological. you don;t like him, please keep it to yourself, or start your own blog to express your opinion.

So? that was between DVXUSER and EOSHD. It shouldn;t have to affect me as a user and customer of DVX, should it?

i don't think bitcrusher was having a pop at EOSHD, just highlighting why there are mixed views on his threads.

yeah bitcrusher! i'm looking forward to some production model footage/info and actually getting my hands on it!

i'm sick to death of the look of footage from my 5Dmark2, think i'l have a wander back into Panasonic land, i loved my old GH13 & DVX100.

i feel even if the GH3 isn't as spectacular as people may be hoping for it will still be a good camera for the price.

nice size/weight, build quality, sealing, articulating screen, etc mode, spirit level! jeez my 5D2 annoys me :)

So what many of you are saying is that you don't care if information posted is accurate or not, so long as you are entertained or the poster is "passionate" (no matter how wrong they may be)?

That may be fine if this is a hobby for you, but for many of us it is not. When EOSHD links are posted here or elsewhere, it lends credence to that site and gives an air of ill-deserved legitimacy. When said misinformation propagates through the internet, it affects our professional lives, as misinformed producers and clients must then be educated in order to make the right decision regarding equipment expenditures.

To cite a recent example, I believe it will now be much more difficult to convince a producer to rent a Canon 1DC, a camera that will be very useful in certain circumstances, because of some BS that EOSHD posted which then spread through the internet via sites like this one. I can hear it now - "Why should we rent that camera? The internet tells me that it is the same thing as a much cheaper stills camera." So I will be having to take time out from productive prepping in order to re-educate those that have been corrupted by this misinformation.

For this reason it is in my best interest to point out EOSHD's lack of credibility whenever mentioned.

RUN.................. the sky is falling.

Seriously, if you can't have an informed discussion with a client, then you need to do something else.

(BTW, I know the sky is falling because I read it on the Intrnrt...) :Drogar-Mark-04(DBG)

I am pissed that the GH3 is bringing back aliasing / moire to the GHx line. Major disappointment.

Better dynamic range and high ISO performance are of no use to me if the video image isn't clean.

I plan on sticking with the GH2 for now, and will save to buy a Canon C100 system.

I'll save my disappointment until I see under what conditions and how bad the moire is. To me the rest of the pluses outweigh the slight chance of moire and aliasing. It is not like its as bad as the lins skipping produces on cannon cameras. The GH3 is pixel binning just not as nicely due to the conessions made for photos.

Yeah, because my job is public relations, not filmmaking. Obviously I have no aptitude for this, hence my lack of credits.

I haven't looked at your credits, nor do I know who you are. I don't really care, but if you are good as you seem to saying, then some guy's blog cannot possibly have any detrimental effect on you professional life.

As I said, if you can't instill trust from a client......

Now there is the problem, isn't it? Rather than spending 5 seconds vetting your sources of information and choosing to listen to real industry professionals, you choose to listen to (and defend) a loudmouth kid with a shiny blog run from his mother's basement, who has the time to attend trade shows and talk to marketing people - since he isn't out there earning a living shooting, he has all the time in the world to polish up the turd you are buying. Enjoy your misinformation ;)

As I said, if you can't instill trust from a client......

LOL you've obviously never dealt with a real line producer - the bottom line is all that matters to them.

h I see, so I guess Andrew spending the day testing the gh3 and having dinner with Takahiro Oyama of Panasonic Europe and Michiharu Uematsu of Panasonic Japan is not legitimate enough for you :).

Exactly.
