eos100D using hdmi out

Hey guys,
trying to use a teradek vidiu with an eos 100d, and I have an issue...whenever I connect the vidiumini to the camera via hdmi the screen on the camera stops working, assuming it is a montitor (which it is not!) essentially meaning I am 'flying blind' whenever I use the vidiu...
I can't find a setting to help me-any thoughts?
 
That's not a feature available on Canon DSLR. Your camera can drive the LCD, or it can drive the HDMI out, but it cannot do them at the same time. Plus, at least on the Rebel series, the HDMI out is downconverted to SD during recording, so you aren't gaining anything by using an external recorder.
 
The SL1 -100D do not downconvert to SD during recording, keeps HD , but the image gets a bit smaller like 90%

Okay, so it sends out a 1080 frame with a smaller image frame within it... still not full-rez.

And since the Vidiu is simply an h.264 streaming encoder, I wonder what is gained here by using it to record since the camera also records in h.264. If it's being used to stream from the camera live-to-web, I get it (sort of); the solution there is to add an external monitor with HDMI loop-through (even something from Lilliput) between the camera and the Vidiu. But since the usable image size is reduced with a black margin all around on the HDMI output, the SL1/100D is not exactly the ideal live streaming cam.

This...
We are using them in an educational setting, and we are not recording via the vidiu, rather streaming live...
I suspect a small monitor with pass through will be the key :)
