Envision & RebeccaD Present "Berlin"

Norm, I just finished the script. I have a break before my next session so I'll call to chat with you about it. I think it looks really good! Great work! Go team!

Good chat, Rebecca, thanks as always for your time & input! Some good tweaks.

Shawn, just PM'd you the link to the script. Look forward to your thoughts (privately, of course, lol).

Though I still believe in the other ending a lot, people just weren't seeing it as Rebecca and I did, and instead found it depressing ... which is not what we intended, nor want the audience to feel.

I have a feeling I would have liked that version better:cheesy: (come on, would have the English Patient been as good of a movie if the patient got up, dusted off his wounds, jumped on a horse and rode off in to the sunset with his girl by his side... or if that guy in Titanic lived to hang out with Rose... I think not:Drogar-Evil(DBG): )

Any way, I'm sure what ever you came up with will be great.

Norm,

Feel free to send me the latest version of the script as well, for inspiration. :)

Herman, I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks all for the feedback!

Norm, good pow-wow today. Thanks for all the effort!

Herman, I've PM'd you a link to the most recent (third) draft of the script. Look forward to your thoughts. :)

Jeremy, you bring up an excellent point. Same point my primary writer, Jeff Hawley, has brought up as well with other fine movies as examples. This is something that Rebecca and I actually spoke in depth about before making the changes. While we saw the ending as very noble, and the ultimate in sacrificial love (therefore, we saw it as very romantic), the overwhelming result we rec'd from readers was nearly a polar opposite to how we felt.

Then when we discussed it further, we both realized we really only enjoy watching films multiple times if they have a ending we feel good about, or something that makes us feel good about ourselves. My wife and I, for example, have a fair some of movies in our library that have depressing endings (Titanic, The Green Mile, etc.) yet never end up watching them more than the initial time simply because we know it'll leave us kind of depressed/heavy at the end, and that's not what we're in the mood for (never are). So we turn back to movies that make us feel good, laugh, love, etc.

Ultimately, we want BERLIN to be something that people will enjoy watching more than once, because of the ending, similar to how we felt about THE ARTIST in the DramaFest.

Truly, it's a tough call, and hopefully one we're making the right decision on...

Whew! This has been an interesting journey thus far on the script. I love the various beats, characters that have been added and I hope the new ending will really resonate with people. We'll see.....

I met with the owner of Huber's today to give him the dates for shooting. He is very excited to have his place in our film. Great guy.

Alternate ending? I bet Rebecca was suppose to die in that first ending, die as she had just whacked off the bad guy/girl, die having served her country, die die die. Well, am I close?

C'mon, Charli, don't you keep up?! :) We gave out the ending clear back on page 11, post #105.

.... Today's deliberation is going to be deciding on what we do differently to the characters with regards to final outcome ... hopefully it'll be as powerful as what we originally intended, but it'll at least be a more satisfying ending apparently.

It turns out people don't think having the lead characters choke to death on mustard gas is as romantic as we thought it was! :cheesy:

Lost in Translation - fantastic ending.

Lost in Space - horrible ending.

Maybe something in between?

There are reasons deep in the human psyche for why stories are enjoyable or not, and they are fairly universal. Aristotle tought on many of the core elements of what propels satisfaction in story in his book Poetics.

It's not just the ending that sucked about Lost in Space. :D

Typical type of let's-use-robots-and-spaceships-and-the-film-will-be-great kind of flick.

Rebecca (and yes, you too, Norm)

I was just thinking about that fantastic interior location you have and also your comment about the owner's enthusiasm. As that truly is a unique location that must have some history to it, have you perhaps considered (will you be) getting some BTS material with the owner and giving us some background on the location itself?

I, for one, would find that very interesting.

Brian, I think that's an excellent idea, and I'm cofident the owner would be MORE than happy to oblige with an interview talking about the history, how he came about owning it, etc.

On another note, the ongoing saga of the script continues. I'm happy to write towards the majority, however we have such a fraction/split on the story, it's driving me nuts, both sides having good arguments for their cases. At this point, Rebecca and I will be discusing today a possible combination of Drafts 2 & 3, with yet a different ending. That, or the thing for us now is to get the two scripts out to as many different folks (friends, family, etc.) as we can to see which script version they prefer most ... then produce that piece.

Norm... I think you should push towards the "surprise the audience" direction. After all, it was Eddie Van Halen who brilliantly uttered the phrase, "f**k the critics."

I say, go with the ending where the protagonist hacks his cell phone to connect to the Hubble Telescope, sending the commands to re-orient the lens so it reflects light from the sun down to a specific location on earth, where his arch-nemesis is having coffee at an outdoor cafe, frying him like a bug under a magnifying glass.

That one was so intense and just felt so "real"...I say choose th... Oh shoot, this was supposed to be in a PM, huh? :embarasse NOBODY READ THIS POST, IT'S PRIVATE!!

Norm - actually, I've been moving stuff to new apartment, I barely have time to read everything on our thread. It truly was just a wild guess. Die, Becca, die! I vote that she dies and kills everyone along with her, bawhawahahaha.

Hey Larry, how'd you get ahold of my script??!?! Did you hack my PC? That's the only way you could have *possibly* come up with that cell phone idea... by stealing it from me... :violent5:
