ok finished watching and heres my 2 cents if your interested.
You had my attention with the title and initial setting. But the movie hopped into cliche land as soon as the american guy got a mystery phone call. Lines delivered from the caller were great though.
There are numerous things i just wouldnt agree with the director on this movie though. The guy playing the arab was pretty good. He was seemed native with his accents and very dynamic. He played out his role. However the other guy seemed stif and short of breath so to speak with his lines as though he were trying to eek out each piece verbatim in hopes of jus nailing them. Obviously the volume was excelent. But in order to truly deliver those lines better a couple of things should have been done.
First more dynamic camera work instead of just "arab...american...arab..and so on". Some slow over shoulder tracking as the american slowly moves closely to the arab breathing into his face playing a pyschological war on him. However instead there was a minute or two of the american just standing casually next to the arab as they discuss their views.
I love seeing well written dialogues and watching them being executed but this seemed like jus a loud dosage of FOX news. Like a televised religious debate meets walker texas ranger. I think alot of this can be chalked up to the director. it seemed as though he just accept shots and body discrepancies kept looming about. Overall i think you passed on setting, lighting, and barely squeeked by on acting, but thats mostly because the dialog originally written just wasnt too exciting to begin with. Sorry to be so negative especially when i havent bothered putting my own work up to be criticized but i wanted to give an opinion.
2 things btw ur info changed a couple times throughout this post...originally it took 8 days to shoot then you cut that down to 5 (?) . Ne ways that and i gotta agree with others here...it was kinda anti-america lol
Thanks for the review. I found out from the editor that his computer went down for a couple of days during the making of the film. Thanks again for taking the time to leave feedback.
You know, I enjoyed watching your movie. While valid as previous observations are, at the end of the day you've finished a movie that is relevant. These days, how many truly are?
You have a story that has something to say. And a good story will always, always, always transcend lackluster production value, acting, editing, etc. Always.
Don't wanna sound mean or anything like that, but I did not like this piece at all. I'm respect your effort, but I don't see how you could've won those awards. I was hooked during the opening titles. Once the guy stepped outta the car, though, I was ready to close the file. I'm not the greatest filmmaker, but I definitely did not enjoy this.
I have no training in script writing or Real filmmaking, jsut a little bit in editing, and an extensive Art background, Photo/ Video art etc. A few simple things would have really spiced up the look. during violent scenes, an extreme close up with sweat/blood glistening would really pop the images, as would a slightly faster shutter speed, to give it a jittery, anxious look, at first, the nslowly smoothign out as the charachters begin to see eachothers point of view. and add impact. during the car scenes n the begining, setting the CAm o nthe ground and focusing on a specific point on the ground far away, then stopping the car with a screech with dirt flying and dust, gives it a commanding sense. the charachter driving is aggresive, and has control. I kinda liked the acting, it was a little hokey, but the sentimental parts were pretty natural. But some how i feel the American charachter would have been more effective and more frightening, if theidea of extracting information werea more pleasurable act. Leaving the charachter with cool, calm collected mindset, maybe lovingly smoking a cigarette, or eating some thing delicate. You know to scare the capitve into thinking hes really bad ass. I dunno... i suppose its all after the fact....
oh wait... seeing how its 6 am and im reallllllllly tired, i forgot to mention, wit hregard to the tire thing, the tireshould stop right in the frame, so it looks liek a close up, but without putting the Cam in danger ( duh...im really stating the obvious)
Thank you for posting. I am taking notes for sure. As for not seeing how I won those awards, I did and it was from 3 industry professionals. But I have to agree that the directing on this short was the down fall.
The theme and acting was really great. May I just suggest some movement from the camera? especially during the conversations where the other person could be framed just "over the shoulder" of the one speaking...
Deep material and content really makes this film topnotch.
Can you belive it I gave him the oppertunity to direct in front of the camera. So he could expand his video buisness and create content for a new website. This is how he repays me, can you say ungrateful?
