John,That was what I was talking about. This guy went on and on about muslims. And not talking about filmmaking.

Re: Elvis' "In The Name Of God' 10 min. Short

I didn't like it. The acting was weak except for the Prisoner. The lack of continuity was atrocious. I can't believe this won a Directing award, because all of those problems are the Director's fault. The camera work however, was very good.

I read all the posts though, and cant seem to find out what you won or where you won it? Do you have a link? I guess I could come on here and say I won something I made up as well.

Ebna

Try and be somewhat constuctive please. Its not always what you say but how you say it.

Elvis

I guess a controversial subject matter :P Gotta be prepared for the critics (Look at M Moore!) Again, props for tackling such a tough subject.

It's funny that the non-industry people are the most critical.

I ask this with all sincerity, but isn't the non-industry folk the very ones that should be critical?

As someone who is not part of industry, I can't go into much detail on the finer points of discussing lighting, camera angles/techniques, scripts, editing and such, but what I (meaning the average Joe-Six-Pack) bring to the table is a fresh and objective set of eyes to a subject. It's like that old saying of not being able to see the forest because of the trees. Like any endeavor that we put a great deal of emotion, time, money and effort into, eventually you lose the ability to become objective to whatever it is you're doing.

In one of the Lord of the Rings DVD featurettes, Peter Jackson mentions how he wish he could be hypnotized and have the ability to look at his movie as a person watching it for the first time.

So try to be understanding of us “non-industry” types. It’s folks like us that films were originally intended for.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Bango Ranger.. very valid point. The Audience is who you wanna make happy.

I agree with Rangers point. But I would have to say that a board made up of people who dream about making movies is not the typical theater going audiance.

Elvis, I've tried to see your movie and all I get is an error. Is there any place where you have it posted?

Nevermind, I just got into Black's website and watched it. Congratulations on the win. I just wished you had more interesting angles in your setups in the barn. And the ending could be cool if the Muslim had spared the guy's life but cut off his ear, who knows, that's just me. Again, when you are in a time crunch, there's not a lot of room for pondering around thinking what to do, but to just do it.
What contest did you win?
It sounds interesting. Do you have more info?

My coment about non-industry people was more directed to the mean spirited comments. Like the one implying I lied. :P

Re: Elvis' "In The Name Of God' 10 min. Short

I almost turned it off because of the agent acting, but loved the Middle-Eastern man. He was very talented. It wasn't that the Agent couldn't act, The director needed to tell him to turn it down a little as it was wwwwaaaaaayyyyy overboard.  I think the agent was you Elvis, so don't be mad, I am not blaming you because you directed it yourself and sometimes directing yourself can be very hard to see what is happening on the screen. For a one man show, it looked very good, but I agree with some of the stunts, too many and the ones that were not done right ruins the mood at the moment.

betsy, thanks for the feedback. I was not the diretor check the credits. But I do agree with the comment on the directing. It was the Irac actor that won best acting by the way. Can you elaborate on your "stunts" comment?

Re: Elvis' "In The Name Of God' 10 min. Short

I think this was a cool story and a great choice for setting. Congrats on your win.

Here is some constructive criticism:
-- The agent's dialogue isn't natural (e.g. "It is not my religion that...) No one speaks like that, and it takes a really good actor to hide bad dialogue.
-- The camera angles/shots are elementary. There should be some close ups and more variety. A good example is when the agent slams the captive on the table -- a CU shot, level with the table would be really dramatic. Instead, we get the same medium shot used for when the Agent shows the captive the photos.
-- The lighting is kind of dim/gray, but it doesn't lend a dramatic effect.

I didn't think you were USA bashing, but it felt like you were more on the antagonist's side with the way you were making the CIA guy come across. I mean, the Arab is being interragated yet he is the one controlling the situation and dominates a lengthy discussion on religion. It just felt like more effort was put into make the Arab realistic than the American...
