F35: El Lobo Mexicano - Short film shot on Sony F35

Wow, firstly, thanks for uploading this. Many parts of that were just beautiful.

1 Were you high when you edited it?
2 Lenses?
3 What do you think, and what do others think and do about the noise in those shadow areas? It's pretty extreme in some shots, like the grass beside the couple interview when the exposure drops down.
4. The blind guy segment could have been the whole film!
5 How did you color? What did you record to?

I'd love to see a clean 1080 download version if you can enable that on Vimeo.

I think this and midway are some of the most beautiful naturalistic, but cinematic looking stuff I've ever seen - not just on F35. Amazing job Jo.

I personally love the noise.

I'm also very interested in what lenses you used! Looked amazing in that sunlight.

Terrific work. I like the continuity of what you're doing between MidWay and this one--I want to see more of this world through this perspective. Not needlessly gritty, just very real in a Cassavetes kind of way.

Normally I HATE experimental films. Congrats on making this the first one that I actually enjoyed sitting through. You managed to make it compelling and beautiful, turning what normally would be a disparate collection of test footage into something with a current of meaning. Excellent.

Damn. Watching via a Roko box on a big THX plasma and looks amazing.

I want to know all the above, plus how did you do audio, like on that couple? It sounds like a high-end mic right above her. I guess I assumed you didnt have a sound guy with you but maybe so.

This is amazing. Before I write a full comment, would you mind letting us download the original file on vimeo please? I'd like to watch it properly. THen I´ll have a ton of questions for you.

Just came back from Mexico City and my Plus membership expired! Everyone should be able to download the file now :-)

To answer a few questions...

Definitely not high while editing the film...
Lenses used: Sigma 18-35 , Older Nikon 80-200, Nikon 17-35 f3.5 (couldn't get my hands on the sigma at the time)
Recorded onto the good ol' hyperdeck shuttle!

And most importantly...colored in Assimilate Scratch using ACES, I feel like this is the only program that will actually utilize the full aces color spectrum using the .ctl provided from sony. Waveforms don't make sense since it's now seeings things in a HUGE spectrum.

I will post some before and after shots and see if you guys can replicate it in other programs that use ACES. I ditched resolve completely...Scratch is amazing

Thank you all for the kinds words! Glad you enjoyed the filme!!

I personally love noise..hence underexposing a bit in certain situations and bringing it up while crushing the blacks. Just like how celluloid can look. I remember reading how S-log works, more pertaining to the F3 about settings the mid tones around 35 IRE. There's something about how that works in a CCD that make the image have a nice texture.

We did have a sound op roll with us while filming in Tijuana. That was fun :-)

This is a good example of so much hidden data contained within s-log. A challenging shot to grade since I exposed right in the middle, yet still worked out nonetheless. Boosted the saturation to see just how much juice there really is! Look at the clouds in the yellow region, I can't even see it in the slog version!

Also you can see how ACES works in the waveform...a different spectrum indeed

I remember the first time I looked at some F35 S-Log footage - blew me away. I could not get over how much there was to bring back in the highlights.

The scene with the blind man --> that looks like a film. THat's the beauty of the F35, while there are some newer camers that look technically great, the F35 has an inherent filmic look (filmic as shot on film) that no other camera (besides Genesis and up to a point Alexa with good grading) has.

Hi Jo,

Could you elaborate how you work with ACES in Scratch. I just can't seem to get it working correctly, I'm getting a strong yellow cast to all my material (although it works fine when working in linear RGB colorspace) and my output is always quite different than what I am previewing in the monitor. I tried following steps delineated in the Scratch & ACES colorspaces white paper (https://www.assimilateinc.com/scratch-sony) but I think this work only for the F65 when working with RAW footage. I can't seem to find a stet-by-step tutorial for working with F35 SLOG material.

If you could write the steps involved and link to any input transform lut or ctl you may be using one, I would truly appreciate it. Thank you.

Cheers,
Igor

I think so many films of modern time post 92 and di look so different. No country for old men vs the wrestler vs spring breakers. I think the f35 gives a really rich digital negative and i also enjoy it more personally than the alexa though i thought ida looked amazing and whiplash and birdman. The red... highlight handling then red dragon and its motion cadence... i still side w you mac on thr charm of the f35

Would you mind sending me a prores clip of the blind guy at the border? I'd love to test the aces workflow as well.
