Effects in King Kong

Just got back from seeing King Kong - great movie , very touching and naomi watts was great.

But i noticed that the green screen work very often looked obvious with the actors looking very much crisper then the backgrounds. It was actually very distracting to me on the island scenes.

I know this film is a technical acheivment - but even the dinosaurs felt more CGI then a lot of the action in lord of the rings.

anyone else think this?

I actually didnt find it to obvious, that movie was probably the best movie ive seen in years. The cinematography was great, and the amount of post in it probably took forever. The movie was great even though some parts green screen was noticeable. But when you film a movie about a huge island in a studio, props for how good it turned out!

There was always a small white halo around the characters in the green screen scenes but I looked past it, and you should too :P

man I wanna watch this movie again now that you got me thinkin about it. Definitely fun.

I'd agree that alot of the greenscreening is obvious. I dont know how that could be messed up...its not like its a new technique. One scene in particular is when Ann is alone with kong...right after dancing and juggling for him. She looks very separate from her surroundings. Also the stampede of course...the worst being jimmy running when he is almost falling off the cliff.

Still it was the most awesome film ive seen in a long while. I think its just that the movie was rushed...i'm sure the dvd will be amazing and the problems solved.

i agree that the movie was truly amazing - just noticed the effects -

and justin - sorry but did a search for kong and nothing comes up

it's cool smelni, i'm not getting on your case really, just saying that the effects and compositing on this movie was talked about in film discussion and the cafe and such.

i know they put it together using shake, i just read a little article about it on the apple start page. i'm going to see it tonight so i'll peep it and see how bad it really is (the effects, not the movie) i'm really excited to see it.

I thought the film was quit unremarkable and a little boring. Of course that might be because the entire world knows how the story ends. I found a great deal of the visual effects to be cheesy and rushed. I was hoping Peter Jackson was going to blow me away as he did in his last Trilogy, but maybe he wasn't allowed the 300 to 1 shooting ratio.

I didn't find it all that appealing for the $207Mil tab that Universal sported. I much preferred WETA's next acheivement in the Chronicles of Narnia. Only took $150Mil for that one and it looked better in most places. WETA is the bomb and PJ was crazy for not using the company he co-founded for Kong. (Maybe dinosaurs and such aren't WETA's bag though)

I thought the effects were great, and I love what seemed like an inside joke when Jack Black was filming the giant brontosaurus and said "no one will think this is fake". You could obviously tell what was CG in the film.

I will say that I found at least 4 different times when Naomi Watts had a blue tinge to the outline of her hair. Some of the chroma keying perhaps?

the majority of the cgi and compositing was really well done in my book, but like everyone else said, there were a few parts that I was glaring at. Once Kong was in NY, the special effects work was incredible. a few small shots weren't so great, but when he finally made it to the tower, I couldn't believe what I was watching. And the long slow shot of him falling off was jawdropping. Overall, great film with a few small kinks in it.

they were way behind schedule, this movie was incredibly ambitious. they were paying anyone almost anything to come down there and help out, they hardly made the release.

I think only other filmmakers will be seeing those kinds of things as so obvious. The masses probably just enjoyed a fantastic movie with awesome effects. My daughter is constantly telling me to shut up when we go see movies because I will make different tech comments on how they might have gotten this shot or that one, dolly shots, crane shots, steadicam, etc.... So, for the most part, I think the things that we see and that may bother us are really just incidental things to "normal" people.

:)

I usually do not go to see movies >_< but I went to see King Kong withsome friends here in Japan.
I was pretty excited from the start until the middle. When dynosaurs came out I was falling from the seat... Ireally did not like the idea to put dynos...
The plot is very very weak in several points but the sequences in NY made me dream...
The fight with byplanes was FANTASTIC!

I think PJ was trying to stay on track as much as possible with the original movie and while he added a certain amount of extra oomph in some scenes, he did a great job of it.

My daughter has never seen the original, she cried when the big ape died and I did the same thing when I saw the original way back when I was a kid. Good job, Mr Jackson.

when I am watching those "huge effects scenes" (and they are not the best) I cannot aviod laughing. so everybody in the cinema is  while I am  or :thumbdown when it goes worse

The only thing that really caught my eye was when watts and kong where on the edge of the cliff at sunset after the T-rex fight. When she goes to sit on his hand, her foot clips into his hand really badly. I think the only reason i noticed it was because it was a really mellow scene. Everything else looked great to me.
