Anyone has this lens with the 7d? I was about to purchase this but decided to hold on to see if anyone has anything positive or negative to write about. What I like is that everything is internal, so I can snap my mattebox right up to the glass. I guess I will be have to be happy with the 1.6x crop...but I figure this lens could also be used on the 5d with no issues?

Also, what is the difference between the imported and the USA model...there is a $100.00 dollar difference...Quality?

I assume you are talking about B&H, I think thats part of their code language which includes, US, Imported and White Box. As far as I can tell US= Official US model, Imported= something like gray market, White Box= Refurbished.

I rent it all the time. The type II with everything internal is huge improvement for mattebox use. I enjoy the range that the 16-35 gives me on the 7D. I tend to flip between this lens and an 85mm prime for most of my coverage.

breathes ? meaning the older 16 35 2.8 lens move in and out when zooming? or picture / lens breathing( technical lens effect when some lens pull focus objects in frame swell /shrink?

This seems like a pretty good option for a fast wide(er) zoom on the 7d.

I'm looking mainly at this to be my main walk around / R n' G lens with a manual pentax 50mm 1.7 for portrait length stuff. Maybe a 100mm macro or even a 24-70l down the line. I think I'm pretty solid in that choice. Anyone have any thoughts?

How does the first version compare to the second? I've read plenty of reviews, but they all seem to be written by people who have the means to simply drop the old for the new.

Does the Mk2 have any improvements that are worth the extra $400. (I'd probably get both used.) Anything worth putting off a FF or rails?

This lens would be my only zoom. (btw... having a 7d and no lens.... The horror.)

Neither lens extends during zoom so they are the same. The II version has a larger filterthread 82mm compared with the former 77mm. I use mine behind a mattebox and it works great.

The V II has less vignetting and a bit better optical performance but they both are really good.

I have a Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and the 24-70 f/2.8 right now. I wanted to get the 17-55mm f/2.8 but it isn't FF35 and the weather sealing was a nice selling point for working in the snow.

I think the 16-35mm range is perfectly showcased in this interior video. Thanks for posting.

You can get nice CUs with 35mm and very nice wides with 16mm. From 35mm to 70mm on the x1.6 sensor you don't get a whole lot tighter but I didn't have a lot of options. The Tokina is super wide at 11mm but it has no range whatsoever, and only works as a 15-16mm on full frame sensors. I think if you can only get one lens and don't want to get the 17-55mm, probably because you want FF coverage, then this might be the best buy... just my 0.02

I know I want it.

I have the former 16-35/2.8 and it's a great lens on the 7D. Used it to make this behind the scenes feature:

Editman:

this is real nice. Do you remember what ISO you had the camera at? Did you do a manual white balance or one of the standard ones.

I am now convinced this is the lens to use. By the way, it maintains a 2.8 thru the zoom?

It is an effective 25,6mm wide angle lens and it stays at 2.8 during the zoom range.
I believe I had it at ISO320 for almost everything in this video.

I love the fact that it does not look ULTRA sharp. I used a TOKINA 50-135mm 2.8 the other day and I thought it was too sharp...especially on close-ups...you could see every blemish in the person's face...not cool.

I have been using Nikon primes on my 7d but I think they are a little too soft...

Oh... the 16mm end, yes, the wide end. I was thinking of the long end and getting confused thanks.

Super8, what about using a Moire filter? That gives you three things in one: 1. Sharp if you need it without the filter, and 2. No moire 3. A little softer look.
