Edius and DV Rack workflow questions

Are there any considerable benefits in using DV Rack with Edius on a core duo 2 PC laptop?

I am trying to decide how necessary DV Rack would be. I would like to use my laptop as a field monitor.

Another issue that I am a little worried about is that the laptop's internal drives are 5400 rpm, but I am looking at running an external 7200 rpm drive off of an esata card in the PC express card slot as a capture drive. Am I going to be OK with this setup?

Lastly, does anyone recommend Edius over Premiere with Aspect HD? I am a long time Premiere user who's thinking about going to Edius. :)

If you want to use your laptop as a field monitor, then good golly yes there are major huge massive benefits to using DV Rack. It's night-and-day different. DV Rack gives you full-screen, full-frame-rate monitoring, pixel-accurate display, split-screen with adjustable split areas and even onionskinning for overlaying transparent images over other images, and then there's the most valuable tool a video shooter can have: the waveform monitor. And a digital disk recorder, and all the other tools.

Download the free demo and try it.

Thanks Barry. It sounds like DV Rack would be a no brainer for me. I am definitely going to try and get it.

Edius has a Waveform Monitor as well, but unfortunately it can't be used during capturing.

If you capture using DV Rack, the AVI files it produces can simply be dragged into the Edius media bin or timeline -- there is no conversion or any other futzing required.

Hey Barry,
Do you find it difficult to use DV Rack on the field since it has a slight time delay? Or are you just marking your Follow focus with DV Rack prior to shooting the scenes?
Also, I hear that there is a new patch. I tried an earlier demo but it did not capture 60fps. it only captured 30fps. When I set the camera to 60fps 720p 24p, DV Rack just duplicated the frames. Which looked great at regular speed but at slow motion it didn't have the in-between frames.
I thought I heard that the new patch would resolve that, but wasn't sure if the free demo has that new patch incorporated now a days.
