after running out of a premiere free trial I recently bought videopad video editor and it works great for just adding transitons, basic cuts audio level adjustments/color correction. But it can only go so far and I am looking for a after effects equivalent for free so that I can adjust things like sharpness contrast and add more advanced effects to my next movie

You could have had a look at Canopus Edius Express which is the same price and probley even more powerful than VideoPad , that has all the tools you will need , the closes AFX package would be Blender.
