Am shopping for Editing Software for PC - after a s/s comparison, I'm at a loss, would love to have as many sound traks as possible, groovy transitions, time compression/expansion, titleling, etc, in an affordable package..$100 or so..bad reviews on the Adobe thing, although it looked good on paper..Help! (I know, a hundred bucks will getcha..). Opinions, please...thanks in advance, oh gurus..

Download demos and try them. It's all a matter of personal preference and no one else's word on what's "best" will mean it's best for you.

That said, pretty much any "around $100" editor will not be able to remove pulldown and let you edit footage as native 24p.

yikes, sounds ominous, please explain, I am sooo confused...3/2 pulldown? End format for viewing and distribution? I aspire to film, edit, sweeten, score and print. I know, askin' for the moon, and not have to buckle my shoes..forgive idiocy..on 1/2 of a shoestring..

Any pulldown. Editors in tht price range will see the footage as 29.97 only. It'll still look like 24p, but you can't edit it as 24p and you'll see interlacing every few frames.

It's an expensive game, if you want to do it right. Of course, there are academic discounts, etc., available for the pro-level software.

Give Sony Vegas a try. Good support on this BBS and easy to pick up program. If your familiar with Adobe products then give Premier a try.

thanks, ryvac and kevmo - looking into that, the hitchcock was funny! Adobe Premiere, from all accounts, looked good but many complaints about crashing..ouch, have heard good things about Andromeda, any current equivalent for the 100B?

Vegas pimpslaps it. And in fact, Vegas Pro is an outstanding choice for integration with the DVX, and on that criterion, I'd call it better than anything else. Which doesn't necessarily mean it's the best choice for you based on other factors -- it could be or it may not be. But for DVX integration, it's tip-top.

But then again, you just might hate it. So you have to figure out how you want to work and try all the demos you can.

Hi, sorry to tag onto someone elses thread like this but I'm a bit of a novice with the techno bit and you've been soooooo helpful in the past. I'm editing on Roxio pro 10 because like Bluto I'm on a bit of a shoestring and I find it really user friendly. No when I check my settings it says Edit Frame Rate 25 fps PAL. (I'm in England by the way) So, am I losing any quality or getting any interlacing? Cheers Jim

It's probably referring to a PAL 25.000 timeline, which is really 50i in the same way an NTSC 29.97 timeline is really 60i.

In theory, you shouldn't see any interlacing because the interlace fields made from each 25p frame should match up on the timeline. (The same happens with 30p on a 60i timeline). But that depends on each "frame" beginning with the first field from that pair, which could get out of whack somehow. If it does, you'll see interlacing.

How many shillings do you have to spend? Edius has a 30 day trial. And isn't to badly priced.

Premiere has a demo and I believe AVID dies as well. Might wanna give them a try before you buy.

Tip, that might be something for you. Today I purchased :
1 x : Grass Valley Edius 5.5 Crossgrade
The Crossgrade 'deal' is that you get Edius 5.5 without all the extra software (titler, Corel DVD creator, etc) with a 500 euro (615 dollars!) discount. Sounds to good te be true, but I bought it today for sure. At a verifiable online store in the Netherlands. I found serveral stores with the same deal and the same explanation about the deal.

So maybe this is something you should do an interntsearch about. The possibility to use the discount ends the end of this month.

This is where I bought it:

So is there any advantage to buying expensive editing software, what will I get for my extra shillings?
I had problem editing 24p footage so that's why I got final cut. try to find an editing program that can edit 24p footage from an unexpensive software.

Editing Software

Adobe Audition actually used to be a great piece of software call Cool Edit Pro made by a company called Syntrillium. While Audition is only up to 1.5, Cool Edit Pro was a standard audio editing tool for years. The best part about Adobe buying them is that they made the software even more affordable.
