Editing software claims 'device is offline' even when XP picks it up

Hi, I am using Premiere Pro CS 3 and it states that my CANON XH G1 is offline even though when I put it on windows XP detects it and the window comes up asking what I would like to do at this point. I need to create a video for a presentation soon so any help would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Windows Movie Maker is not picking it up either.

While the camera is in VCR/PLAY, in the menu check your signal setup, make sure your playback standard is correct for what type of video you shot.
Then make sure the same is correct in Premiere's capture settings. I use HDVsplit because it allows scene detect and live preview. It's much better than Premiere's capture utility.

HDV split has seemed to pick up and control the camera. I think I will use this as a solution if need be.

However, in my VCR settings playback STD as well as HD Down-Conv are grayed out. Any idea why?

you have unplug the firewire cable to be able to change down convert, also if down convert is on premier wont see the camera (HD project) but windoze will :)
