Editing HD 1080i on FCP- the image looks fat.

Howdy,

Well I suppose when a client shoots his own footage XH A1 I should thank him for saving life on my DVX100 but the learning curve is getting to me. I captured the footage with FCP using the HDV 1080i preset and everything went fine. Getting to the timeline (preset for HDV 1080i) I soon found I had to render everything just to see it. I then exported the sequence with compressor using the H.264 for DVD setting. After finishing in DVD Studio Pro and watching it on my macs dvd player the image looks a little fat/wide.
What did I miss?

My hope is that I can take the footage which has already been captured using the HDV 1080i preset and convert it to a size I can produce a SD dvd. It would be great if I could use the sequence that I've already set up in FCP but I suppose that'd be a stretch.

Thanks for your thoughts and know how,
aloha

Hey thanks for reply,

Fortunately I've discovered a tick well lets just say I ran a test. Using FCP 5.1 HD with a Macbook Pro I created a new project using the HDV 1080i sequence preset. I imported my captured files and to my surprise I did NOT have to render it, plus it looked a helluva lot sharper than my previous project- and when I went to DVD Studio Pro and imported the default H.264 for DVD Quicktime file the image looked NORMAL. I must have got settings mixed up. I have multiple projects with different settings and no matter how organized I try to be I get settings for projects mixed up. I think my trouble is I have not yet figured how to create a new project without creating settings issues with other existing projects.

Anytime when you drag clips into your final cut pro timeline, and you have to render them.. then your sequence settings must be wrong.

Before you start doing anything next time, go to Close Project, then click Easy Setup, and choose the option you're working with (HDV 1080i for instance) then click Ok, and THENNNN create a new Sequence. It'll be smooth then.
