editing and long GOP

I've been researching the A1 and came across the long GOP used to capture HD to Mini DV tape. Does this present a problem in editing if you want to do some quick cuts? I'd be using latest versions of Premier and AE.

Additional data: Now I'm reading in the NLE section about the difficulties encountered in handling HDV. Perhaps P2 or Flash is a less troublesome capture/edit way to go.

Use one of the Cineform products like Neo to process your files into high quality intermediate files that edits easily. The new Veags 8 does not recompress long Gop files when edited so HDV gets more friendly as time goes on. Don't let this issue discourage you as the A1 is a great camera for the price and has great features.

OK. I've done some more reading. Just want to avoid unpleasant surprises when going to HD. How would this system work?

XH-A1, Intel Dual Core, XP SP2, 3 gigs ram, CS3 versions of Premier and AE, Instant HD or Prospect HD to avoid banding, dedicated Sata drive for video files.

The 2nd drive presents a problem as my Dell only handles 2 internal drives and my 2nd is currently a Rapter mostly full of sound samples. Would a external firewire drive work OK?

Check out Newtek's SpeedEdit. it handles .m2t hdv files from the A1 without any issues in realtime. No need for expensive intermediate file formats/conversions.

I've been using it for a few months now and haven't found the need to use my other NLEs (Premier Pro CS3 and Edius Pro4).

I currently own Premier Pro and AE 6.5. Can I use Speed Edit to do basic edits and export to AE or Premier for further processing like Trapcode plugins, etc?

Sure, but even if you render out to .m2t format, you've just recompressed the video so it wouldn't be as pristine as the original...although you might not be able to see it unless you played them side-by-side. This would be true anytime you move between 2 NLE's, regardless of which NLE's you use.

So, what do most people do to avoid re compression issues and still be able to work with the clips in AE. I suppose you do what you have to do on the first render and leave it alone after that.

You can export or render to an uncompressed RGB .AVI or some other lossless codec and load that fille into AE. But the files are huge so you'll need a PC with a dual or quad core if you expect to work in or near real-time. That will help keep generation loss to a minimum. I've done that a few times to make a composite and then loaded it back into my NLE.

I try to do as much as I can in the NLE itself without exporting it into another app. But sometimes you just can't avoid it.

Fortunately, SE has many additional features that make it easier. It's by no means the perfect NLE but it's currently my favorite for working with HDV.
