Editing 25F, what preset?

Hey there,

Quick question on 25F.

I will be shooting my next project in 25F mode, in SD (so NOT HDV). This makes the HDV presets for Canons 24F, 25F and 30F for Premiere rather 'useless'.

Now my question is, since I'm shooting SD and can't use the HDV presets in Premiere 2.0, what preset should I use? Is it safe to use a 25fps progressive mode without losing data (since the manual states the 25F is stored in a 50i container). Or should I simply use the regular PAL DV Widescreen preset? Also, which is the safest way to capture my footage?

I will be exporting to .avi DV and probably DVD. Will this work with the 25F mode in SD?

Thanks in advance.

you need to upgrade to cs3 at least.
in cs4 i just use the 25p hdv settings.

That's what I was afraid of... The editing stations we're using at our school only run PrPro 2.0. So this doesn't have a way of editing the 25F mode, not even a custom preset I can create myself? (I don't have access to one at the moment, so I can't check for myself).

But if I'll edit on my own comptuer, and use CS3/4, can the regular progressive modes/presets of Premiere handle the 25F like 'true' 25P? And won't this give problems exporting to DVD (which'll be interlaced/lower-field PAL 50i).

And what if I capture in Premiere CS3/4, is there I preset so I can edit in Premiere 2.0?

Thanks!

there might be a setting in project settings in 2 where you can turn it from fields to progressive. Actually i think they took that out in 2 but it was in ppro 1.
i've been editing in 25p on premiere since forever and have not had a problem. even with interlaced footage i just chucked a deinterlacing plugin on it. Now that i shoot 25p with the xha1, i dont have to deinterlace and it looks pretty much the same if not better than using a deinterlacing plugin.
And when exporting to dvd, just export as progressive and it will look fine. No need to interlace it.

if you create a cs4 project, you'll want to stick to cs4 as it is not backwards compatible. as for the captured video files themselves, maybe you can create a preset in 2 with the same dimensions and pixel aspect ratio as hdv but set the fields as progressive.

Interresting topic. So if Im shooting 25F with my XHA1 I can stick to CS3's HDV 25P preset? The reason why Im trying to get clarity here is that the Canon 25F preset for PremCS3 frame rate is 23.96 which I found rather confusing...thanks

You'd want to change that frame rate to 25p if you're dealing with pal footage. CS4 has a preset for pal 25p. You might have to change the pal 50i hdv setting from fields to progressive in cs3.

:dankk2:for the info @bimdas. Another question please:

Im shooting HDV 25F. So I would be correct in assuming that in CS3 I could use a 1080P 25 project? I have this current project that is shot mostly in 25F but I will be using a little 50i footage. What would you recommend I do to this 50i footage in a 25P project as Ive tried "always deinterlace and it looks terrible. I mays well leave it interlaced..

I also have read that in Prem CS4 you can mix 50i and 25F footage and the new media encoder CS4 automaticaly sorts it out accourding to output? One can also create different property sequences in a project. This sounds rather interresting and has anyone tried it?

Cant help with the FCP as Im not very familiar with its setup.

i dont know what sort of deinterlacer you use but I've stuck with Fieldskit and it has always shown good results for me. So for a 25p project with 50i material, I'd stick a fieldskit filter on the 50i material to make it into 25p.
you can mix and match different formats in cs4 but I've never tried it and i wouldn't trust the media encoder's deinterlacer.

editing hdv footage in a 1080p 25 project in cs3 sounds doable but you might have to change the pixel aspect from hdv to square pixels on the captured footage
