easy question about firestore and backup

Hey I am new to the forum and cannot find this answer.

I usually use a P2 card, then download to two external HDs , two to make sure I have a backup. One HD goes home with me the other the director.

If I get firestore 100, will I have to back it up to a HD and take the last 2 hours on the set to do so, or is there a way to back it up on the fly? A second Firestore linked? The idea of not having to stop every 10 minutes is appealing.

I am a big believer in more than one copy of the footage.

ALSO, I have seen some rumors on this site that people are able to get Ipods to do the same thing as a firestore. Is this true?
A $350.00 80 gig Ipod vs. A $2000 100 gig firestore is a no-brainer.

Thanks.

Duhhh, I found a thread about the Ipod. It does say you can set it up to offload, but not to catch footage on the fly.

Anyone know about the back up thing?

As far as I know with the Firestore, you would have to back up via a computer to see it as an external hardrive. In this sense, after capturing footage to the firestore, think of the firestore as an external hard drive. You can't connect two external hard drives and swap files without some kind of hardware or computer controller between them right? So to answer your question, you will need a computer to off load it to an HD, and the speed is faster than real time. It's basically the exact same speed as a firewire 400 external harddrive running at 5400RPM.

robotx is correct, because you set the FS-100 into a Hard Drive mode when off loading. It shows up on your Desktop as a generic Firewire drive. Copy times are pretty fast, too. And you can copy to two other hard drives at one time. Copy times are pretty fast.

And for the limited amount of storage an iPod would give you, well, I just don't see spending $300 on a 60 gig slow as molases hard drive to back up my stuff on. Especially one that's not going to be under any sort of warranty (once you hack the iPod, your warranty is out the window). It's a nice novelty, but not in any way practical. I got mine to store my music, videos, photos, address book, and calendar on it, and use as a portable drive for my personal files. If I wanted a portable 60 gig drive to back up my MXF data, I could fine something much cheaper. But then, how much MXF recording time is 60 Gigs? Not much! Especially since I can get MUCH MORE storage space for the same price by buying something packaged and designed as an external hard drive.
