Easy mounting solution for the Tascam DR-60D with rails & matte box

Did my first commercial shoot with the DR-60D. Very pleased, anally tested in ProTools and had no artifact issues that the first batch seemed to have. For $200 including PluralEyes, it's a steal.

I can't use the under-camera mount with matte box and FF (I never use a grip for video with DSLRs anyway, makes a bad form factor even worse). If you're not shooting handheld, this really worked out great for me. (Shoulder mount with the DR, I think I'd just find a way to clip it to my belt or something).

I just added a single 15mm rod perpendicular to my main rods, using a 90 degree over/under ($15) and added a swivel 1/4" plate to it ($15). You only really need a single connection point, the rod won't twist if you tuck it under the next rod. Loosen the clamp to slide the rod out if you need to get to the right side of the unit, but that's headphone and line out controls, both of which (for me) were set & forget. You'll want 90-degree 1/8 cable if you're using line-out, and I added a 90-degree adapter for my headphones. The thing works great as a preamp/mixer as well, but using this with the D7100, the camera audio was the usual hiss-fest (fine for synch).

With a really nice AKG Hyper condenser, I found the audio to be really crisp and full; I used the limiter (great limiter, never heard it pump, but very hard to spike the meters with it) and the low cut at 80 hz.

I use a Small Rig Mounting Plate (Amazon, $30) and it is attached to the rails behind the DSLR. In my rig it winds up completely below the level of the camera. I can still see the rear camera monitor.
