Hello,
Newbie here . But I just want one thing confirmed before i dive into my backing up decision.

In order to go the Esata route. All I need, I have a MBP with an express card 34, is a two port e-sata II adapter card and then harddrives that are compatible with esata, correct?

I use eSata via expresscard34 on my laptop (a pc).... just get an eSata housing and pop some sata II harddrives in there, or by an external harddrive that is already in an esata housing.

www.newegg.com is a decent starting place for housings.

www.buy.com is a good place to check out some external drives that have eSata ports.

Easy as pie.

I bought a little ole thecus 2050 external dual drive enclosure a couple of years ago and put in a couple of 360 gig drives to start. Still purring along... I use them as my edit drives.

Later,
Jason

If you don't have an esata port on your computer, then you need one, yes. ExpressCard is a good way to go, if you have an expresscard slot.

Here are a couple of eSata hdd's with enclosures:

When you buy your eSata expresscard, a lot of them will have a software raid allowing you to raid two drives together several different ways.

Also, the Thecus I mentioned (I'm sure you can find others and better ones as well) will do a raid 1 or raid 0 right on the box, so there is no software required.

Just buy a couple of drives, pop 'em in there, and then choose your raid option and the box will format the drives and do the necessary work.

2 1TB drives in a Raid 1 would be a pretty good option for redundancy, for example.

Jason

hi all

fyi - just talked to a great sales rep at CalDigit who informed me that they are no longer selling the eSATA adapter card for the MacBook Pro PCI Express slot.
