Hello Danbrains,

Panasonic USA has no way of distributing PAL cameras to the states. If you are interested in a PAL camera though, we can look into getting you one. Your best bet would be to check with B&H.

Thanks,

Andrew Hoffman

How much will shipping be to 91307? and I assume since I am in CA there will no sales tax, correct?

If you are running a business, there is a sales or use tax in your state for business purposes. Except for perhaps Oregon.

Don't risk it. It ain't worth it.

Every state that has a sales tax for instate purchases has a use tax for out of state of purchases

You need to pay that use tax on the purchase from an out of state of purchase if you do not pay sales tax to that state.

So if you are a business, and buy out of state or internet and pay no sales tax, you MUST pay a use tax in the state where your residence is.

Get caught not doing this, and there will be audit, penalties and interest.

As I said, saving a couple of hundred dollars isn't worth it.

In California, it goes like this:

"In general, you must pay California use tax if you purchase an item out-of-state (for example, by telephone, over the Internet, by mail, or in person) and

the seller does not collect California sales or use tax, and you use, give away, store, or consume the item in this state."

Wow, I had no idea... Does this apply to ANYTHING you buy or just expensive video gear?

I've never heard of that, and I've never heard of anyone being audited for that either. The whole point of buying things out of state is to make sure you avoid sales taxes.

Anyway, if you know anything about the tax code, if you buy any equipment that is going to be used at least 6 months of the year for filmmaking, even if it's not professional filmmaking or if that's not your primary profession, you still only have to pay 3.25% sales tax in California (not sure how it works in other states), NOT 8.25% as it is in Los Angeles. Most corporations pay the 8.25% and then file at the end of the year for a sales tax refund of the 5% they overpaid. I can get you the number of the statute if it really interests you, but some companies like Birns & Sawyer will give you the 3.25% tax right when you buy equipment from them if you sign a form, then it's your job to prove if you were audited later that you did in fact use that equipment for filmmaking purposes. So even if you did pay a 3.25% sales tax on out of state items, that's not too bad, just don't go paying 8.25% for any reason, you will lose a lot of money if you're buying equipment in bulk like we have this year ($60,000+ in equipment, for instance; if you buy $5,000 in stuff maybe you don't care too much, it's not a huge deal, but 5% of $60,000 is $3,000, that's a lot of money).

You've never heard of a "use" tax?

You correctly point out the California film making tax break.

But a use tax is in effect in every state that has a sales tax, and yes, people do get audited.

I don't see the point in dismissing it because you hadn't heard of it. Idaho, for example, has done this to virtually every professional group in the last ten years.

It is the law, and for the life of me, I wouldn't ignore this just to save a few hundred dollars.

Yes you are correct, I was at EVS friday and they told me the same thing: I can get the lower tax rate because I am making a full feature film and it is a business venture at this point.

As far as the USE tax goes, Isn't it more like: "If you buy in state a used item you pay a use tax" ? I am not sure it applies to brand new items coming from out of state. But I will find out this week, just to be sure.

At this point, I am going to buy from local reputable dealer, so there will be no surprises :) !

I'm from Oregon, we don't have sales taxes, so I don't know everything about yet another stupid tax from the government, but I do know I wouldn't bother sending them more money on items I bought from other companies out of state. It's not my problem their system is flawed. It's a 50-state country, items from other states don't incur sales taxes, I'm not wasting my time and energy in an effort to send the government MORE undeserved money. No thanks!

Anyway nobody would ever get busted for something like that if they were smart, I'd hire an attorney and sue the government, to be frank. It's called a "SALES tax," not a use tax, there is no tax for using items you own. That's the most absurd statement I've ever heard. I brought my computer down to California, should I send in $250 per year because I'm using it? No, that's ridiculous. It's a sales tax, which means it's incurred only once an item is sold. After that there are no taxes on owned items except for property taxes, and property taxes don't apply to equipment.

Ok Deuce,

Yes, the USE Tax is up to the state of CA. We will not charge you MD Sales Tax though because you're out of state. UPS Ground shipping is approximatly $55.

Let me know if there is anything else that we can help you with.

It's not my problem their system is flawed. It's a 50-state country, items from other states don't incur sales taxes,

Oregon may be different because it doesn't have a sales tax. And if your state has a use tax, you are obligated to pay it. If you don't, you have broken the law.

It's anybody's call. I just telling you that this what the law provides, and it is your problem and responsibility, not some one elses.

Anyway nobody would ever get busted for something like that if they were smart, I'd hire an attorney and sue the government, to be frank. It's called a "SALES tax," not a use tax, there is no tax for using items you own. That's the most absurd statement I've ever heard. After that there are no taxes on owned items except for property taxes, and property taxes don't apply to equipment.

The tax is a compensating tax for out of state purchases where no sales tax was charged.

What you call "absurd" is the law. It's been tested in the US Supreme Court and the states that charge sales tax.

For example, "In some cases, the taxing jurisdiction cannot always reliably determine whether any of their residents purchased items and then brought them into the jurisdiction. This often results in the submission of any use tax payments as being on the honor of the purchaser. Other states require annual statements, filed under pain of perjury, that the resident has submitted all necessary use-tax payments. The filing of a false document is often a much more serious crime than evading tax on out-of-state purchases. The state of Connecticut Attorney General occasionally publicizes the indictment of a blatant use-tax violator and soon receives millions of dollars from other guilty parties hoping for amnesty."

Rather than calling the tax "absurd" and "ridiculous," why not read about it and its reach and requirements:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_tax

And businesses DO get audiited. Oregon does not have a use or sales tax.

Wouldn't it be great to ignore the laws that we don't find acceptable?

I just providing this information as a "heads up" to those who assume that internet purchases are "tax free." That is a mistaken assumption. What anybody does is their business.
