DVXuser Visual Effects Fest/Challenge

OK, people. The talented Larry R has built our upload system for the VFX Fest. When you are ready to show us your masterpiece simply navigate to this page:

http://www.dvxfest.com/upload/vfx_entry.shtml

We'll be working out viewing and voting before next week.

Additionally, for future contests we will be implementing a rule that your finished piece will be an NTSC frame (720x480) for uniformity BUT we shall give you higher resolution images so that you'll have the chance to make some choices with respect to creating virtual camera moves (panning, zooming, tilt etc.) For the current fest please make your final clip the exact image size as the original.

Sounds good Mark.

Just checking on the deadline again. It's 6pm cali time 31st right?

Not to mention the fests where we do actual filming . . .

And we will my prescious, we will.

Hey guys, I also wanted to point out that if your entry has a name or theme, feel free to enter that. we will hopefully try to set the server in such a way as it can be done. LarryR and Mark have invested a hell of a lot of time getting this thing toether, and I don't want to put more work on their shoulders, but I think being able to name your work makes it a bit more artistic and classy.

General question

*cowers*

I just finished getting the plate broken down - getting ready to do the major compositing and such. Should I stick to AE for this?

I was thinking of doing some tutorials on my workflow and how I put it together. And the vast majority of my packages people won't have. And I am not an expert on AE, but I want to learn it a little better.

Just wondering if we need to stay in one package or do whatever it takes. Maybe in the later fests I will crack out the heavy guns.

Get out the big guns, Matt! Everybody can learn from workflow no matter what apps you use. When you say the vast majority of your packages people won't have I'm curious. Are these proprietary applications? You're free to use AE if you like but go ahead and use anything else as well.

This is a good opportunity to try stuff out. I'm going to try a couple different particle generators, including a couple pretty obscure ones, to see what snow effects I can get.

This is going to be a small and manageable fest. I'm considering putting together a viewing page with notes on each entry regarding workflow and the like. Of course, to have that you'll need to PM me your info.

As you wish:

After Effects
Photoshop
Partical Illusion
Vegas
Lightwave
Sound Forge
ACID

That's pretty much it.

Well I operate:

Maya 8.5
Nuke
Real Flow 4
MatchMover
The Imagineer suite
AE CS3 with Trapcode form and Particular
Photoshop
Shake
FCS2

I think that is it?

For this I'm using:

photoshop CS2
C4D R10.1 for Ice & snow.
Vegas 7 for compositing & CC.

Mostly completed. Making some final adjustments.

I've rendered with the photo-jpeg codec. I didn't have a best or high setting so I set it at 75%.
It's 7.75 seconds at 10.7 MB. Is that okay?

That's pretty much what I get. 8 seconds and 15 megs. We will have to check with LarryR and Mark to see if those file sizes are acceptable.

But that is certainly on par with the results I get.

Those sizes are fine. However, I guess I need clarification of the rules. What is the time limit for the uploaded pieces? I had copied this from the original rules post:
And winterize it. Since it is only a picture, technically you could submit simply an altered one of this picture. Don't. Submit a 2-5 second of Animation please.

Did this get changed to 8 seconds?

the dude abides

It does not have to be. Not sure what the min & max limits are.

...I'de like to add the length of this does not have to be tied to 3 second. From own tests so far, mine is going to be probably around 8 seconds. Try and keep it from getting boring if you go long.

And if you want your animation to only be 3 seconds that's fine.
...

It is very important that we establish a maximum file size because of our bandwidth issues. Thus, since Matt got 15 megs and 8 secs. I'm going to impose a 15 meg limit. You can make yours whatever length you choose as long as you don't exceed 15 megs.

Well guys, I will not be able to make the deadline for tomorrow. Unless of course I can jam something out in a few hours.

I had a major issue with maya today working on a dynamic explosion that ate up most of my free time. Basically stupid user error. I will still try and get it done. I have the plate, I just need to finish the winterization.

If I don't make the deadline, I will still try to get it up when I get it done.

Mines uploaded. I kept it fairly simple . I don't think Hollywood will be calling me but I learned a few things in the process.

Looking forward to seeing the rest. Your's too Mattykins when you finish it.
