For the first time on DVXuser, we are going to have Fests specifically oriented towards Visual/Special Effects and Design. Here are the guidelines this far, though they are subject to update to better things, should we as a group decide so:

1. Each Fest will either be a one or two week challenge
2. Overall length of submission can be anywhere from 2-10 seconds
3. The Theme of the Fest will be determined by you in a vote fashion
4. Any software can be used, even demo software.
5. Any camera can be used, but please limit the frame size to 720X480 in either .9 or widescreen format.
6. Sound effects and sound design are welcome, but don’t use pirated material or music please.

With those general guidelines, let me explain what I hope to achieve here: Every video now has effect, from color grading to slow motion, to high end compositing. But not a lot of people know how to do these, and a lot would like to learn.

My goal with this is to have collaborative efforts if wanted, and to have people learn, and share their techniques, methods, and workflow, so that even more people can learn. There will be no prizes given, no real winners, though there will be a vote on favorite video. Whoever’s video is voted favorite will then share the techniques gone through to make it what it is. And we will all learn. The same applies to any sound design.

If you don’t do visual effects, or don’t consider yourself a guru, this is an excellent opportunity to expand you knowledge base. This can help you in the future with your own writing, knowing what’s available and achievable. We will need creative people for concept design too, especially to collaborate with on story design.

For those that really wish to push their VFX skills, this will be an excellent way to really pad your demo reel. The main thing is to have fun and learn.

And we will keep the work time relatively short, no Fest should require more than 10-20 hours (if you even need that much), and we can decide beforehand if an especially challenging Fest will deserve to be a two week one, or maybe longer.

As always, no porn and let’s keep cursing to a minimum. I’d say let’s keep it clean, but if the Theme for the fest is “Exploding Head”, that’s not going to happen.

In this thread I also encourage and ask for suggestions from all of you on how we can make the Fests even better. I certainly don’t know it all about things, and all requests or suggestions will certainly be considered, maybe voted on, and if liked, incorporated into the rules.

I want to share and have fun doing so. So collaborate, and get your ideas flowing.

The most important thing I want to stress is I don’t want ANYONE to hesitate to submit something you may think is not as good as someone else’s. Harsh criticism will not be tolerated, but constructive critiquing will. You may submit something you really want to achieve but can’t get the look you want, and someone else may suggest to you ways of getting exactly what you are looking for. That’s what this Fest and Contest is really about. If you have any questions, ask them in this thread and we will discuss them as a group. I am also looking for anyone who is willing to help me on the administrative side and run things.

Take care all, and I look forward to talking further with you guys about the possibilites.

Cool this sounds like fun. I'm just barely beginning to do some work in VFX and this could be a great way to challenge myself and build some new skills. Looking forward to it.

Great idea. I'm sure bugs can be worked as it progresses. I wouldn't have too many back to back though as CGI & animation can be time consuming.
Nice to see the seed planted though.

Oh, will this be in the News section or where should we look for updates?

I'll use iMovie for my lightning effects, which I will then composite into Microsoft Paint os do some roto work.

Sounds cool!

I know you're kidding but my first effect was all hand coded in c++ just to rotate and antialias a spinning newspaper for a dvxuser short. I also did a chroma key shot hand coded as well. Both for HeroFest. I didn't know 3D programs had come so far until I downloaded a demo.

So I guess iMovie and paint is as good a place as any to start.

I think there should be a section of the forum dedicated to 'Current DVX Fests' now. Script-Fest, Time-Fest, this fest. Sounds great by the way, not slagging anyone off. Think it's great. =)

Two weeks is kind of short for VFX is you hold a day job but I love this idea. I say this because of the time it may take to test an effect and then tweak and render again is going to go by fast. Plus reading up on the desired effect may take a few days alone. I for one, will be using this fest to incorporate live action and 3D so there will be a lot of trial and error and I would hate to have to rush it because then I learn nothing. For that RFeyeD short I did, I only had one shot to get everything right and if it didn't work I scrapped it real quick for something not as nice but got the job done. The short suffered for it a lot I think because of the super short time I had from script to submission.

You may have something there. Maybe submit the particular clips from the submitted shorts.

This is awesome. I'm just starting to pick up Cinema 4D and could use some help from the gurus around here.

I agree, if that is the theme. In that case, we could decide to extend the due date. But I don't think many people are going to need photorealistic compositing. It may come up, but as I said, this should be a collaborative effort. If you don't have time to do the compositing, find someone who does and both work on it.

I would like suggestions on the first challenge. Let's make this one something relatively simple. Anything goes guys, even use of still photo's. And if you think you can't do that much with a couple of still pics, look at these:

http://www.paramm.com/finalshort500x270.mov

and

http://www.paramm.com/short.mov

all done with stills, camera projection/mapping and 3D. I don't expect us to hit quite this level, but you would be amazed with what you can do with simple things. All non looking CG elements of these were create via camera projection/mapping.

Lets get some ideas on the first one. Weigh in people.

I don't know how easy or exciting this is but at some point I think everyone has had to add or remove something from a scene. Mikes/booms, bottles, shadows, signs, rain drops on the lens, ect. It's something that crops up alot.

I'm in!

As for ideas? Hmmmm....

Perhaps we could supply everyone with the same 3 short video clips shot on a green screen. Then you can create your own plates/effects/etc and create a scene.
