I'm sure you've all noticed a big increase in people asking questions that have already been answered many many many times (or even stickied).

The reason is that search is configured to be useless for most people.

Firstly there's a four-character limit, and secondly there's a 60-second limit between searches.

I propose keeping the limits for non-members, and lowering the limit (perhaps progressively) for members.

Personally, I find it a major PITA that I can't search for "P2" without having to resort to Google. However the biggest PITA is going through the number of posts that could have been avoided if only searching was more convenient for newbs who don't have the inclination or skill to use Google for their searches.

I usually do GOOGLE searches, with dvxuser at the end or at the beginning of my search. That way, you don't have to wait 60 seconds, and we're using the GOOGLE'S search engine which is more powerful. I think that's the main reason - google is bigger, so they can afford to not have that 60 second wait.

I think the 60 second wait is due to the bandwith, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like that part fixed, it's annoying :)

Agreed. It sucks when you misspell things. I do that. A lot.

I have no problem using Google to search sites, but the problem is that a very small number of people know how to do it -- and the type of person who would post a question that obviously would have been posted before (and often) is even less inclined to know.

This isn't about US searching (because we're all geniuses, natch), but making it easier for newcomers to search so that the number of redundant posts are lowered, and also easier for newcomers to find the information they need to become geniuses like the rest of us.

I know this would be annoying every time responsible folks post a new thread. But here is your answer:

Set it up so when someone posts a new thread, the server searches using their thread title and before it allows them to post the thread it shows them links to other threads with the same name or including the same major words. Then it gives them an ignore button.

That would work in my opinion.

agreed. i do the google thing too, but as far as i know you can't search within specific sections or threads that way.

fix it fix it
It's so stressfull using another site to search; the white backgrounds of the searchengines are blinding me eyes !

The 4-character limit doesn't bother me much. If you're searching for 'P2' or 'Red' or 'DVX', your search term is too broad anyway and you're going to get a massive number of hits. Be more specific. 'P2 card capacity' or 'Red white balance' or 'DVX battery' at least.

The 60 second time limit is annoying and counterproductive, though.

The sentence that sums this up best is might be:

Why can't I search for "DVX" on DVXuser?

I wonder how much it would cost... it might be a matter of creating a new avenue for revenue by increasing advertising somehow in a way that didn't bug too much... oh his defense, Jared is obviously swamped with all the going ons at Red.
