Re: DVXuser Interview with Nancy Schreiber
All this is fine and well, but the DVX100 was used on this project for one simple reason: the company involved requires handheld DV, as part of its marketing strategy.
What results is something of an absurdity: $200K or $300K features, with "stars", shot with $3500 camerad which can't be focused reliably without an external monitor, when the production could have easily afforded something better, in either the film or video realm.
As for the DP award at Sundance, Ellen Kuras won previously for a feature shot with a PD150, so awarding the prize to a DV project is nothing new. One also suspects here that there's an element of affirmative action, for the format....
Finally, there is not a tremendous difference between material shot on the DVX100 and the PD150 (or VX1000, for that matter), when transferred to film, based on tests I've seen. As nancy noted, there's a cap on resolution, and video dynamic range is inherently inferior to film.... Far more crucial than which camera one chooses in this price range, is production value, not to mention the story and the acting.
