DVXuser Forum Upgrade: Feedback, Questions, Answers...

I'm having some wierdness when I try to log in, at first it doesn't seem to take but if I reopen my browser and then keep moving around eventually it logs me in.
Win 7, IE 8

Also doesn't remember me for very long anymore :(

I'm interested to see how this goes. Apparently a lot of people on vB have been complaining about the new version of the software. That it's buggy and saying things like vB is no longer run by developers but by managers now. I guess the original guys who developed vB have now moved on to developing new forum software at http://xenforo.com/

I used to run a filmmaking board years ago using vB and it was really the best software you could get. But it does seem like it's gone downhill since the buyout.

Personally I'm not a fan of the new DVX look. It's not your fault, because every vB powered board I visit that upgraded has the same look. I like the colors and everything, classic DVX. But I don't like all the gradients. It feels like it's trying too hard to be web 2.0 and failing.

While this may be flashy and cool, I still think old school forums are more easy to read:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/tripod-sticks-heads/66270-vinten-vision-3-manfrotto-3046-legs.html

Everything is separated, in its own place, with buttons defined and clearly visible.

Evolving looks AND usability at the same time looks like a difficult task.

What I miss is contrast between a message and another, contrast to clearly separate buttons (Edit post, Reply), etc, etc.

When you have a mush of same contrast your eyes dance around the forum trying to look for a single function.

Some functions like the THREAD TOOLS, SEARCH THREAD, RATE THIS THREAD menu up in the post page could become icon based with smoother drop-downs.

Most of the stuff I'm commenting could be corrected with a nice redesign of the graphical elements of this theme.

Added a mobile style. It, like the forum at large, is a work in progress.

If you browse dvxuser with a mobile device now, it should automatically recognize it and give you the mobile style. All posts made from a mobile device using this style will also be notated as such, as you can see from the previous post of mine.

Hopefully, the mobile dvxusers will find this much more user-friendly.

I've also removed titles from individual posts, made a few small changes to the layout of the "Last post by" section, etc... More sweeping changes that you will notice coming soon :) .

Later,
Jason

For the mobile version again:
When you are in a subforum or when you display the latest posts, the individual threads are hard to discern/read. The font is black on a dark blue background.

sure. I'll have to write an exception for iPads in. p.s. if you didn't see it, in the meantime, you can click "PC Mode" at the top right of the mobile style, and it will put you back into the main dvxuser style that is currently in use.

EDIT: can someone with an ipad verify whether or not the mobile style comes up for you by default now?

Thanks.

I'm finding that the forum now is IE only. I really can't use it with Firefox. Since I do everything but this forum with Firefox, my participation here is less now.

The way I use the forum is to hit a bookmark which takes me directly to here:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/

I then click on the "new posts" link which will do a database sort based on the last time I marked all the forums as read. The resulting display has four columns. Thread title/author, replies/views, last post, and then forum title.

It's this last column that I need to be able to read. I can read it in IE, but not Firefox. In both browsers the display of this column is two lines. The first line is always "Forum:" which is, quite honestly, useless. I don't need that on every row for eight pages.

The second line gives the forum name, like "Panasonic GH1". I can read it just fine in IE, but in Firefox the bottom 3/4 of the line is cut off and missing. So much so that mostly I can't guess which forum name is being displayed.

Since I'm not interested in most of the forums, and every day there are usually at least eight pages of new forum posts to look through, this has killed my ability to use this feature.

Same thing happened on another forum I used to frequent -- APUG. Same VBulletin upgrade problem, same display result. Since I can't use the forum the way that I want, my use has become sporatic at best. Instead of answering other users questions like I used to when I could find said questions, now I only go there to ask questions myself. Not good for either the forum at large or for me either.

I don't want that to happen here. But I need to be able to use the forum with firefox. Anything you can do to help will be appreciated. If you could just get the text "Forum:" out of that last column and let the forum name show on the top line, it would work fine for me. Else, something else to make the names of the sub-forums visible.

I'm just saying I'm not always going to be able to go to the computer that has IE 8 on it just to browse this one particular website when I don't do this for any of the others that I haunt. And IE has less than 50% of the browswer market now.

Bruce, can you send me some frame grabs of what you are talking about. i'm unable to replicate this from my end. browsing with firefox and not having the same issue here.

chrome, firefox, and ie7 and beyond, and opera are all rendering the site pretty much the same for me on this computer.

better on mobile simon?

Well done! Much better :)

Yeah, seems to be a problem on your side bruce. Working fine for me as well. Maybe you've got some plugins installed that cause the error?

Still get mobile
Version by default on the iPad.

ok. Larry will take care of this one. in the meantime, iPad users can just click PC Mode if they prefer... should be fixed soon enough though.

That's odd... we've got to see if another firefox user can confirm this when viewing "New Posts". I can't re-create it, and neither has anyone else I've asked yet.... If we can get someone else with the same problem, then might be something we can fix. But, if it's just you it's happening to, seems like the issue might be on your end with this particular problem.

I've actually got this on two machines. One a win7, the other an ancient win2k. No real point in talking about the old machine as it's beyond support from Microsoft, etc. But it still works, and it does still run Firefox 3.6.10 just like the win7 box. They both display the same, so I'm thinking it's not likely to be the OS. Maybe a Firefox setting? But what...

I'm running win 7/64-bit and have firefox 3.6.10 here also. It's a barebones installation though... only firebug added.

We'll keep looking into this and I'll try out firefox on a couple of other systems and see if I can reproduce this.

We'll keep digging. Don't worry... if it's something that can be fixed on our end, we'll get it fixed eventually.
