DVXuser Forum Upgrade: Feedback, Questions, Answers...

I think it is best to give Jason some time.
He'll fix all main issues.

And I really want some script free text only template. This one drives me mad.

difficulty reading

difficulty reading

I'm using win7 64bit, with Firefox 3.6.10 to view DVXuser.com

From: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/

I click on the Forum tab. Then the New Posts link. Ending here:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/search.php?searchid=358

Which is a display after a database search to find the new posts from all the sub forums.

Each row of the display consists of four columns. The title of the thread, replies and views, last posting to the thread, and finally the forum to which the thread belongs.

I don't have any trouble reading either of the first two columns eventhough there are two lines of text in each. But the last two columns are difficult to read, because both lines of text are cut off vertically. As if the height of the text exceeds the area available. This is particularly bad on the last column where all I can read is "Forum:"

I've tried decreasing the size of the text via Firefox's "cntr -" key, and it makes everything smaller in proportion so the problem remains, only smaller.

Interestingly, this problem doesn't occur with IE 8.0.7600.16385, 32 bit or 64 bit. With the microsoft browsers the text heights are stable.

I know that you are tuning the site after major upgrades. This is probably not a high priority to you, I understand that. I'm just hoping that it shows up on the admin's radar eventually and gets looked at.

Thanks for the upgrade. Other than the above, it looks great.

Sure... thanks for pointing it out... the bugs and styling issues like this will need to be addressed first and foremost, then we'll work on layout, usability, incorporating additional user suggestions, etc...

We're kind of in a "beta" phase at the moment :)

p.s. we're 1.94 million of the way there on the search index... things will hopefully pep up a bit once that is done (though there is still a pretty major indexing that needs to happen to improve performance)... So, far working fine for me in ie8, chrome, and firefox... on a hoss computer and on a piddly netbook... will have to wait until all the indexing is complete to gauge performance better.

anyways... you guys post up any issues, bugs, or styling complaints you come across here in this thread, and I'm going to take a nap for a while :)

Just be patient with me, and keep in mind that it is a work in progress... next steps (after fundamental fixes) will depend largely on overall feedback.

(EDIT: actually i need to babysit until the search index finishes, so I'll be around a while longer yet, if anyone needs anything)

p.s. Screen grabs help a lot when you are referring to something :)

I am finding the regular thread titles a bit hard to focus on now. Not that the text itself is hard to see, but it seems a little too busy with the "Started by..." date and time information immediately beneath the title in the exact same font size and style.

I feel like the titles should be a bit larger or have something else to differentiate them from the other text immediately surrounding them.

With the previous version of the forum, I was able to link to externally hosted, JPEG images and they would be displayed full size. By default, at least, the new forum software scales each image to fit the current width of your web browser. This makes it hard to know whether you're looking at a 100% crop or a scaled image. Here's an example with labeled frame dimensions from a recent post:

Nice work Jason! I would agree that there's something about the new font of the thread titles that makes it harder to scan through... it may be just the font size, I can't pinpoint what it is exactly.
I know this wouldn't happen here at DVXUser, but I remember when Fatwallet changed their look and it was somewhat harder to scan quickly down the thread titles -- I totally stopped going to that site because of it.

I'm sure you'll figure out what works best - Keep up the good work!

it is much more difficult for me to read. i agree with what others have said about the threads being harder to look at. it looks cluttered. i think part of the problem why i am having a harder time reading is the new shade of gray; there isn't as much contrast between the background color and the font color. this rollover image shows what i'm talking about. an option to change color schemes would help.

thanks jason. as far as the threads go, if you take the date and time off the "started by", i think it will look cleaner.

search index finished... things should ahve picked up now... My search times went from 2 seconds (while the search index was being built) back to the usual .02-.04 seconds now...

Let me know how performance is.

Keep posting up bugs, and issues you have with the styling as well... I'll continue to refine over the next couple of days and improve things.

Thanks, guys...

I agree on the started by and date thngy. Taking that out of the way would make the thread page easier to read.

... or even just making that "extra" information noticeably smaller and a darker color.

The new site is pretty good, although I do agree with some of the comments about the need for different size font for the "started by" line. I do not agree with the idea to remove the date from the started by line, because that is a quick way of seeing how long the thread has been around.

Would it be possible to have more of a difference between the colors for threads with unread posts vs. threads with no unread posts? In the previous version, it was very easy to see really quickly which threads had new posts. Today, it seems like I have to look really hard at the icon to tell which it is.

i agree on the font... the threadlists in particular... the post lists need some change too i think... but it all hurts my eyes right now :) so... I'm going to rest them and if you guys will be patient with me over the next couple of days I'll be making some of these changes to improve the overall look and bring it to a happier place before moving on to larger modifications....

I find the background colors a bit too light which makes it hard to read. Maybe a little more contrasty.
Or maybe allow an option to switch to more contrasty like the older colors.
