It would be a great Idea to have some type of externaly powered portable hard drive, maybe 80 gigs that can be connected to the HVX so that when we shoot on location we wont be restricted to a laptop.

It's already happening. Focus Info in developing a Firestore DTE doing that exact thing. It will cost under 2K. Here's the press release:

The Firestore option has made me a head of heels in love with this camera. Can't wait.

Jarred,
I talked the owner of a video dub company who mentioned how Panasonic was not good as far
as video camera repair service and reliability. Have you heard anything like this?

That future camera HD-D5, Barry's talking about sounds like a dream. In the meantime, HVX will be a nice addition to the panasonic line. Will be reserving judgments until I see actual footage. I remember buying my xl1 looooooong time ago for about 5000. It can't do what my dvx100b can, at about 2/3 the price. Only drawback I see with HVX is that most people don't really have access to HD players to see its true beauty, and editing this format is going to be a pain. Can't wait to play with it though. Cheers.

I understand that the 200 will be available only to pre-purchase individuals in December. Other than that, a regular buyer would have to wait until February or so. How and where can I pre-purchase one of the 200s?

Several dealers are offering pre-order lists, including EVS, Birns & Sawyer, Abel Cine Tech, and Specialized Communications. All have representatives who participate on this site, and at least EVS and Specialized have banner ads here on the site about their HVX offers.

Where did this 200 available information come from? Or is it just hearsay?

I would say that it is probably spot on as most of the dealers that I know that have backorders with us, also have taken down payments for cameras and have sizeable backorders.

So there may be a couple of dealers that don't have them all pre-sold, but that would be a limited number. I think. Some may hold on to one for demo.

Best,

Jan

Jan,
Are you saying only 200 cameras are available for allocation to all of US? Can you clarify please, as to me, your message seems vague as to what you are saying is "spot on". I have mine pre-ordered and deposit on it. What should I expect as far as availablity?

Also....how can they be backordered if they haven't shipped? I was told I am set to get mine on the "initial order". Just trying to get a feel for what is "really" going to happen in December.

What I am saying is that we have more cameras on backorder than will be delivered. It will be a smaller shipment in December that I had initially hoped and then a second shipment in the middle of Januarty and a second at the end.

>Also....how can they be backordered if they haven't shipped?

Well if something is on backorder it has not been shipped. Some of the dealers have taken orders and so they too have a backorder list.

Not sure where you have it on order and not sure of how many that dealer has pre-sold and where you fall in to that list.

Not sure that helps, but i would check in with your dealer. And BTW, this is exactly wat the person was talking about. He had not placed an initial order and was looking to purchase one of the first ones coming into the country. I know there are dozens of people like yourself that have been waiting on a list, and my comment was to let them know that if they had not been on a pre-order list, it would be unlikely to even consider getting one of the first cameras.

Does that make a little more sense?

Best,

Jan

Jan,
That helps....thanks. My concern is that I am on a list but not one of the very first 10-15....I don't know exactly where. I really want it in December to get familiar with it for a shoot I have scheduled for the end of January. I was hoping that at worst I would get in in an early-mid January batch if not December. When I heard February I freaked! I really can't wait that long!

I am still hoping for a Christmas surprise.

No, I think what you're seeing there is that the earlier poster used "200" as shorthand for "HVX200". I don't think anybody was referencing quantity.

We are definitely going to save a couple for our Rental Department, but not the 6 we were originally hoping for. We'll just wait till January for the rest. My 4 DVX100B's are still renting every day of the week, and I have 7 DVX100A's out on a long-term rental for the BBC's "Dancing with the Stars" show until February. Hot cameras. :)

If not using a deck, instead a pc. What would the min requirements be in order to deal with HD footage? Wondering because I await the HVX but concerned about editing. Any specs on a PC comp that could deal with HD would be appreciated.

Depends what NLE you are on, here are AVID's (Dual Xeon is best):

http://www.avid.com/products/xpressprohd/specs.asp#pc

I think you also need a translator card for DVCPRO on PC, but not sure.

If you are on FCP and mac, the requirements are very affordable, any dual G5 will do, under $2000 now, and fast SATA drives. DVCPRO is native on mac, no additional hardware needed.

Check my drive thread for a SATA solution for mac:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=37638

You can get even cheaper 500GB drives now.

i just scrolled all the way down to the last page so I apologize if this has already been asked, but can the HVX still record onto mini dv tape or is it P2 / 1394 only?

Hi,
Do you know if there's any problem with editing DVCPRO HD native on the new g4 powerbook upgraded to 7200 rpm drive with 2gig ram? I know the display's not quite there but just for editing realtime using a 1Tb la Cie FW800 drive - that's my plan anyway for field editing.....
