DVXUser Battery Problem - The thing is expanding

Hi all,

I bought 2 of the DVX User batteries and I like them a lot, I have one that has a growing problem, literally. The plastic case is expanding on the top and bottom. Just now I heard a loud cracking noise and it was the battery sitting on my desk, I see it now has expanded even more to the point of cracking the case.

It's like something is inside trying to come out.

Anyone else had this problem, I think I remember someone had the same thing happen to their battery.

That doesn't sound very good, and it could blow up... literally. I'm not sure who people contact on here about the battery's, but there is someone who handles it.

Give it a few minutes and I'm sure someone will chime in with correct contact info.

I'd recommend moving your battery outside to a safe area immediately. Preferably as gently and swiftly as possible. (and if you have them handy, safety glasses might not be a bad idea either, seriously.) If it starts to smoke, it's about to vent; just drop it and get well clear.

Not super likely, but if it does go off, it could/would be very dangerous.

And do contact Deb.

And post a photo for us :)

I had just sat down before reading the last post, and all of the sudden the battery cracked wide open and the internal cells started coming out, sort of like some robot horror thing! The individual cells didn't explode, but could see that all of them were bulging individually, and all that bulging had to go somewhere, so out they came:Drogar-Dum(DBG):

I took some pics, (loading them out of the camera right now)

I also took a pic of my other battery as I noticed a slight bulge in that one as well.

I took the bad one and threw it in the trash can outside, then moved it away from the house in case it caused a fire and burned my house down.

Pics coming up!

Well, not to sound like a total geek....ut if you have another battery, get your damn camera. Might be cool footage in timelapse.

But yeah, do it outside

You did not see any small cells coming out from inside the bigger cells? :) This is how they make them...
Joking aside, Mikko is right. The pack was in major trouble, it could have all end up bad.

Man, that laptop was smokin! Bet that would have been something to have that happen in the middle of a big presentation:evil:

Likely it is the capacitors that are going. Electrolytic caps or Aluminum caps will bulge when they fail. You need to get it out into a safe area.

The pack is made up of 6 identical cells, they are wired in such a way that 3 cells make up one 3.6V cluster, 2 clusters for 7.2V. When one cell in a cluster goes bad, the other 2 cells start sending current into the bad cell, causing all of them to become hot, and swell. At some point the swelling causes the pack to pop.

Remember the old joke about the hamster and duck tape? No? Okay good... let's not go there... but that's exactly what I did with one of my expanding batteries... are you saying that's not the normal, safe, procedure?

:)

$80 in the trash can? I don't think I can do that... plus the other one is fattening up also... over the course of a couple months though... so what? Pitch 'em both?

It's always something isn't it?

I really like the batteries (except for the exploding part:undecided)

Sent an email to deb, haven't heard back.

Personally, I think there should be something done to rectify this. I'll give them a little more time, but this should have been addressed by now.

Does anyone know of another contact for the batteries?
Haven't gotten any response about the problem.
