dvxuser app for the iphone/ipad?

Has anyone ever considered creating a dvxuser app for the iphone/ipad or other
mobile device? I did a quick search, but found no threads on the subject.

As I'm sure many would agree, in this world of Twitter, Facebook, Four Square,
YouTube, etc all accessible on-the-go, a dvxuser app would be amazing.

I was up at the cottage last week, and continued to tweet and check my
Facebook account from my Blackberry, but I didn't have access to a computer
so I never signed on to dvxuser. Shame really.

Anywho. Considering the massive amount of technical talent on this site I'm
sure it could be done easily. My guess is it's just a case of one of the powers
that be saying "make it so".

Until then. I wait patiently.

Peter.

I heard others have offered and they've been declined, can't speculate on the reasons why. I'd use it.

Perhaps we can coax a response from one of the founders?

Interesting note: Even their Twitter page @dvxuser, with 908 followers
only has 4 tweets since it's creation June 9th of last year.

Are they fighting "mobilization" (if I can call it that)? You would think
they'd be embracing it.

I'm curious to know what added functionality could make this a worthwhile endeavor. I browse dvxuser all day long on my iphone and have never thought the need for a dedicated app. but a list of suggested functionality could get the ball rolling here. thoughts? suggestions?

btw, I don't think that twitter account is run by anyone at dvxuser. someone likely appropriated the name thinking they'd get some benefit out of it, then got bored with it. could be wrong.

@dvxfest on the otherhand is run by myself and Larry R.

I do not see any benefits at least for an iPad, I'm on this site on my iPad using safari or my pc remotely from my iPad. On an iPad it's just like your an a laptop or desktop.

Thanks for the tip Zak. I will start following @DVXfest right away.
I'm @peter_reynolds if you'd like to return the follow.

Regarded added functionality, Facebook and Twitter have "app versions",
so there must be reasons they've done so. Off the top of my head, the
first advantage would be not having to access my Blackberry's web
browser. Second would be that the mobile dvxuser site would be optimized
for hand-held devices. Right now navigation on a small screen is a pain.

I'll give it some more thought.

No problems on my Droid.

Facebook is just a terrible site to visit in general in terms of load times and it rendering correctly/at all. That is why I like it in a mobile app version as opposed to using my phone or iPad browser.

I browsed DVXuser every now and again over the course of a ten day vacation on a 3inch screen over spotty 3G. IMO, it works just fine.

Text that was larger and scaled to the iphone screen would be nice. It's just useable in landscape view, but still too much panning and scanning for my taste.

I brought this up with Larry R some time ago when I was looking for a project to hone mobile skills on. But I don't think there is much to be gained by an actual app for DVXUser. Unless you were going to add some radical new means of dealing with the data. Like Tweetdeck is a pretty nice piece of software for twitter and brings some new ways of looking at the data than the website does. Or unless you wanted to take advantage of some specific qualities that smartphones can offer like geolocation, access to camera, etc.

Most companies have jumped on apps simply to be on the band wagon. Many apps are little more than mobile versions of websites. Facebook is a little different because of the camera integration for uploading photos, and soon the location-based stuff.

One advantage might be offline viewing of content. But there is so much content on DVXUser, and people generally want the most up to date content, that is likely not viable.

But like Batutta, I would like to see a genuine mobile site for DVXUser. I do more and more of my web surfing on mobile now and would love a version formatted for mobile browsing. And especially for the DVXFests, where I could watch films and interact with the threads.

I think Zak was doing some texting of votes for the latest screening? Maybe we could brainstorm some app ideas based on genuine functionality like that and focused on DVXUser events...

Agreed. At the very least, an optimized version of what already exists to
avoid all the pan-and-scan.

I think there's a real opportunity here.

Something as simple as "who's online" from the main page would be a great
feature. In the past, I've been on set and had a problem with my camera, I
posted the problem and was lucky enough to get a response right away. But
that was a fluke. An enhanced ability to interact with people on the site would
be great for both newbie and veteran filmmakers.

Looking forward to reading people's thoughts.

someone made an app for reduser and offered it up for free... if someone here would like to do the same and make it a non-profit endeavor, I'd be fine with that... Otherwise, once we've done some upgrades and such, i'll look into options for mobile users...

Jason, the RedUser app should be very easily re-used for DVXUser if that's all the functionality people want. It's the same board software, presumably it just reads the RSS feeds or something like that, so you should be able to just put new colors in place, change the RSS links, and bingo. In fact, if that's all it has to do, there are already frameworks out there that offer a lot more functionality and are very cheap.
