What is the best software to use for special effects?

Any of the compositing packages will cover you. I'm partial to AfterEffects myself. And for gunshots & related effects be sure and bookmark www.detonationfilms.com. Their gunshot & associated VFX sections are awesome. You can usually find some good free stuff there for muzzle flashes and the like. Plus, their commercial VFX clips are dirt cheap anyway.

you need to use RAM Preview to get sound .

but the thing is, i have completed my film in imovie. the problem is i want to transfer it to after effects and get some muzzle flashes in. and when i do. it doesnt go in.

When you import your footage and bring it into your comp do you see the little speaker icon next to the footage? When you go up to "Composition/Preview" and choose "Audio Preview" do you hear the sound?

is there a tutorial for after effects? cuz now my movie is slow, and there is no sound. i am using a mac so just to let you know
