DVX200 Wish List

There have been several threads spread around about user requests for new features on the next Panasonic camera, whatever succeeds the DVX100A (which we have been alternately calling the DVX200, or the HDVX, or whatever).

This post is an attempt to compile a comprehensive wish list, so Panasonic can see at one glance what it is that we want.  There's no guarantee that we'll get all (or ANY) of these items, but at least they'll know what we're wishing for!

I'll make it a sticky post and try to keep it up to date.

DVX200/HDVX WISH LIST:
16x9 chipset, switchable to 4:3 (not compromised like XL2 4:3)

16x9 VF and LCD, switchable to 4:3

High-resolution VF and LCD

Preferably B&W CRT VF

Full underscan capability on the VF and/or LCD

High-def resolution, whether HDV or DVCPRO-HD, switchable to DV resolution

4:2:2 color sampling

Firewire output of HD video, for desktop editing.  Also component HD output for live HD monitoring

Variable frame rates: at least 24P/30P/60i, but preferably with
VariCam-style variable frame rates.  60P would rule!

While we're switching frame rates, PAL/NTSC in the same unit would be very cool, as would 720/24p, 720/25p, 720/30p, and of course the ultimate: 1080/24p.

Peaking and zebras, available at the same time

Better lens cap (maybe integrated like FX1's)

Timecode generator/reader with TC IN/TC OUT jacks for slaving camera timecodes

Interchangeable lenses with an industry-standard lens mount, maybe B4

Longer reach on the stock zoom lens: 16x would be nice.  Keep the same 4.5mm wide-angle, but give us more telephoto.

Magnified focus mode like on the FX1.  Zoom in to pixel-for-pixel magnification for easy precise focus in the field.

Larger CCD's.  2/3" would be ideal.

Remote focus control, at least LANC caliber, or through some improved system.

Some cool external controls, like the XL2 promises, for things like custom-tuning the gamma curves or for swapping scene settings, etc.

Audio meters that read out with white/yellow/red.

Fix the audio sync system properly, so there's no echo in the headphones and the audio's recorded in sync on tape.  Also upgrade the headphone circuitry so there's no hiss.

Solid-state recording to P2 cards, as well as tape.

Adjustable viewfinder markings for TV safe, 4:3 crop, rule-of-thirds composition, and center cross.

Improved focus/zoom readout in the vf showing zoom millimeters and focus distance-to-subject, switchable to 00-99 readout.

Lockable hard stops for the focus ring.  What would be cool is if the focus ring had gear teeth for a follow focus or jib focus motor.

Graphics overlay capability -- a memory card slot where we can load JPG's or TGA's or some other standard form of alpha-channel graphics. That way we can set framing, use masking, add a network "bug" overlay, or perhaps other features all while shooting.

Some provision for remote focus, remote zoom, and remote iris.  Give us that control and I can use the camera in a multi-camera switched environment, on the end of a jib arm, etc.  It would be really cool if we had a remote controller with dials and LCD readouts on the controller that let us dial in the exact f-stop (calibrated in 1/6 stops or whatever the new camera is), exact zoom setting (in Z00-Z99 format) and exact focus setting (in MF00-MF99 format).

KEEP EVERY FEATURE THE DVX HAS.  Don't give with one hand and take away with the other.  We love the DVX as-is, please make the new camera as good as the current, plus add more! :)

Also, compatibility with existing DVX accessories would be cool, a 72mm threaded zoom ring and an identical bayonet on the front would be great for those of us upgrading but wanting to keep our accessories like lens adapters, etc.

Long battery life.  The current 6-hour CGR-D54 situation with the DVX is pretty good.

Add auto audio level control.  No self-respecting professional dramatic production would use it, but for ENG/news/auto shooting, it'd be a nice addition.

Oh, and keep it affordable, of course.  Under $5000, preferably under $4000 MSRP!  ;D

Re: DVX200 Wish List

my items of interest to add:

1.    acurate and detailed mm markings and numbers on ZOOM ring with indicator mark, and numbers and markings by feet for the focus ring with indicator mark.

2. ditto on Shai's comment on making the iris control a normal ring type control on the lense barrel if sticking with a non- removable lense. again this should include f-stop numbers for reference on the ring with an indicator mark..just like any regular 35mm lense...

3. 3 ND settings instead of just 2 .. it would be nice to have one in between the current NDs on the DVX.

4. industry standard pitch gear teeth on the focus ring

5. built in pez dispenser.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

Geez, Barry covered everything I've ever thought of, plus more. The only one he missed was:

Have the XLR covers attach to the body!

Re: DVX200 Wish List

I want mine to wake me up in the morning with a coffee. And then go to work for me, and then cook me dinner and then...

Ah hell, i'll just get married. Whats better, a wife or a DVX?

That's a lot to ask of any company! :D If anyone will hear us though it would be panasonic!

* solid state memory is awesome
* perhaps an even larger lens diameter?
* removeable lens. No need to produce extra lenses really but a removable lens would be very useful for 35mm adapters for instance.
* colored peaking as on the Sony HDV cam
* ability to physically lock the manual zoom and focus rings at any given setting (to avoid changes via camera bumps)

Re: DVX200 Wish List

It would be nice if all the accessories we have bought for our DVXs would fit the next one (lenses, matteboxes, etc.). So Shaw, although a larger diameter on the lens would be nice, it would also be a nightmare having to buy a whole new set of lenses.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

I would add, the same system as on the sdx 900 :

I mean, allowing people to use and download the cine-like gamma curve setting files they wish.

1/2 ccd's would be already great :)

Re: DVX200 Wish List

One 35mm CCD would be AMAZING. Even one altisens 2/3'' sensor. Cheaper, too, I guess.

I whole heartedly agree with that.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

All of the above and it could be in under my tree by Christmas morning. Oh, sorry wish list not a wish.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

Excellent list, Barry.  Above all, keeping the pro's of the current DVX is essential.  It is a superb camera, and anything less, in any cateory, would simply be a step backward.

That said... The most important features for me are:
Native 16x9 CCDs (or 1 35mm size CMOS, like the upcoming Kinetta)
Tapeless acquisition (P2 cards, or Hard Disk)
MiniDV Tape acquisition (especially good for backup of tapeless)
24pA, 30p, 60i
Underscan on the LCD or Viewfinder (maybe switchable on/off)
Adjustable hard stops on focus and zoom rings
DVCPro50 / HD
Interchangeable lenses w/standard mount
$3500-$4999

Re: DVX200 Wish List

Two more to add:

1)Variable compression settings & Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 outs. With all the problems and limitations with tape and many portable hard drives poping up it sure would be nice to side step this HDV format and dial in 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 and have the signal go out firewire 800 or USB 2.0 straight into a portable hard drive. You can still record a DV compressed signal to MiniDV tape as you always have and use it to create your EDL for your uncompressed footage.

2)"Dual exposure" extended latitude CCDs. A proven technology that extend the latitude by leaps and bounds by using a CCD that capture the image at two different exposures at the same given time and replaces white clipped sections of the shot with the image detail from the second (darker) exposure. The two pieces are combined on the fly in camera and recorded as one image only to save space and make tape capture still possible. This is existing technology.

Oh yeah I'd love to creep even slower on the powered zoom. I want to "feel" it - not see it.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

I too like Barry's list...and Brett's last additions.
Fixing the "weak points"...highest on my list are:
A "real" servo zoom with 8-16 steps instead of 3 to allow bump free starts, and actual LANC implementation to use a variety of zoom/focus controllers.
Also heavier fluid damping (a la Sony) so that the manual zoom is really useable for creep in/out. I saw the new Sony HDV over at EVS, and this is the "feel" Pana should be going for in zoom&focus control...butter smooth at both ends.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

ditto all the above. my addition: if you stick to the unchangeable lens, put the iris control as a ring on it, where one traditionally finds it.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

Everytime someone create one of this topics, I have to say to loose the built in mic and include the directional mic in the package instead, like the PD-150. I am starting to think I'm the only one that seems to want this, but it really makes sense for me. The fact that it gets in the way of a mattebox is already ridiculous, but even worse is the fact that it is useless and makes the camera look like a toy. Since the Directional mic is horribly overpriced, it is obvious the built in mic is only the ceapest the could put in there so they could win some more money with the acessory directional. If there wasn't a built in mic, they would have to include the other mic (at least for reference recording). I just want a mic I can remove when it's not necessary. Or a built in mic that doesn't show.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

please dont ever get rid of the peaking feature...that feature is one of my favorite things ever! its one of the reason why im not getting a xl2 anytime soon.

Re: DVX200 Wish List

it should also come with a free upgrade from the dvx100 for dvxuser.com members ;D
