DVX100B right for me?, and eBay seller, too cheap.

Howdy folks,

I'm about to drop some money on my first prosumer camera. For the past two years I've been filming with a Panasonic GS300, with several "modifications" to make it fit what I do.

The show I co-created is called the Periodic Review of NASIOC. We started with no idea wtf we were doing, and have been slowly working our way up the proverbial ladder. You can check out our most recent episode here, http://www.periodicreview.com

So is the DVX100B right for me? The show is mostly filming cars and people. I figured the 24p would help with interlace issues when filming cars driving fast. That and the XL2/1/1s is just too huge.

Second question, this ebay seller sells for wicked cheap, is there something I'm missing? link to eBay seller. $1969 plus accessories seems too good to be true.

Anyway, I love my GS300 and I'm sure I'll love this camera if and when I get it.

Word,

-Tyler

GarvinCalifornia's right. It's most likely gray market. Functionally, there's nothing wrong with gray market cameras, but there's a whole lot of risk involved, the first of which being no manufacturer warranty, no matter what the seller says.

Second, there are so many grey market sellers out there (most based in New York/New Jersey) and you'll find a common link to all of them: no customer service. Once you find out that you aren't happy with the item, just try returning it and getting a refund. Often, the item never even shows up. You'll get a reply from the seller that the item is suddenly and unexpectedly back-ordered, yet they will refuse to cancel the order and refund the money that they've already charged to your credit card.

Sometimes, again contrary to the advertised item, the gray market item won't come with all the true factory-issue accessories. You might even find that it has no battery. Again, just try and complain/get a refund/secure the accessories, etc.

Be cautious. It's much better to go through a reputable dealer (i.e. BH Photo Video, Full Compass, etc.) and pay full price for a legitimate purchase.

You'll love the images you can get out of the DVX-100B. And your GS300 will still be handy for getting shots in tight spaces where even the DVX is too unwieldy (you can use Magic Bullet to give your GS300 footage a little more DVX-ish look).

I would recommend looking in the marketplace on here. It's certainly worth it to consider buying a used one because most of the users here are great people just looking for a good home for their camera while they move up to a better one. You would easily be able to find that price, and most likely be able to beat it.

First of all, as long as you are okay with SD and the tape format, you can't really do any better than the DVX100B. A lot of indie films are still made with it and I will be sticking with it until I am ready to switch over to hi-def.
I bought mine from B&H because I wanted to deal with an authorized dealer. Like tvirus said, you can find some bargains on here but just try to research the person doing the selling. Personally, I wouldn't even consider buying from someone who just joined the user group the day before.
i don't like bad-mouthing anyone but I personally don't care for ebay or the like. I bought a camera, just a cheap little DV for dumping footage into FCP, and it was a disappointment. Advertised as new, it has obvious signs of use on the housing and other issues. It essentially does what I need it to do so i didn't make a big deal out of it but I was still lied to. Buyer beware.

I whole heartedly agree with aramik, I also went through B&H and you can get an amazing deal on one from them now and you will fall in love with an amazing camera; it hasn't stopped surprising me or amazing me every time I pick it up and shoot. Enough of that, save money where you can the batteries that are sold through this site are incredible and an amazing deal.

I picked up my 100B from the marketplace a few weeks ago. Totally satisfied and feel like i got a pretty good deal. Personally i rather buy here then ebay.
