DVX100B Purchase Questions

Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask a question like this, but I was wondering if somebody can help me out with something.

I'm looking to get a DVX100B with a 35mm adaptor, rails system, mattebox, and something to give DVX100B a true 16:9. I heard the 16:9 isn't real on the camcorder, but despite that the camcorder looks real good.

If anybody can help, please give me suggestions of what pieces of equipment I can get names, where I can get it, etc.

I'm sorry, I know I'm a newbie... A big one at that... I'm just mind boggled right now and not sure what to do... I just want to avoid crappy images, than I don't wan't lenses that will give me focus problems, images too grainy, or images to staticy...

Also, please let me know how the DVX100B works with the Vegas 7. Does Vegas 7 support 24p advanced? I also hear it loses quality in image (color and stuff like that), how can I prevent that...

Please reply...

Thanks

I would use the squeeze mode that comes with the camera. It really looks good, and for your purposes will work fine...in fact I used it for a recent shoot for a restaurant and it looked great.

If it were me, and I was just starting out, I would get the camera and then buy accessories after I used it for a while and figured out what I really need. Personally, I don't think the 35mm adapter is going to make your film any more watchable than shooting it without. Yes, it's nice to have all that short depth of field look, but if you're starting out, I would go without it, personally.

Also, I use vegas, but I don't know about 24pa. I would probably suggest that you use straight 24p, though, unless you're going to transfer to film. I'm almost certain there's no other compelling reason to go with "p advanced" other than if you're going to film out. Also, there really shouldn't be any color degradation with Vegas. I would be interested to hear the work flow of the person who said there is color loss...

Thanks for the replies

The thing is, I really... really want the best quality possible... I was looking at the Cinevate, M2, and Wdr35. The guy from Cinevate already replied and told me it won't work behind the adaptor, but MAYBE infront of it...

The HVX200 is not an option for me... And the only reason I would wan't it is for it's 16:9, not because it shoots HD on P2 or FireStore

Right now, my biggest concer is getting the 16:9 with the Panasonic without using an adaptor... I was trying to read the 4x3-16x9 conversion forum, but god theres a lot of steps to that... It's not sinking in... Ya know what I mean?

Howbout if I shot in the 16:9 squeez mode, and than opened it in the editor in 16:9? Would that come out to true 16:9? Quality will be a little off and/or grainy though right? Quality... It's like the value of a movie... I can't risk losing that...

To me it seems like I can get great quality, but I can't get 16:9... Without 16:9... How does it get transfered to film? How can I get a 2:35:1 aspect ratio? Doesn't it have to be shot on 16:9 to be played in theatres? (Which a film by me probobly won't, but just incase lol)

I'm probobly not going to stick with Vegas because Red Giants Instant HD doesn't work with it, so I've e-mailed them asking them a few questions...

I shot a short film once... but it was shot on a consumer camcorder... and it was really bad... really bad... Oh it was so bad... But it was a lot of fun... Maybe if everybody put their heads together it could have been better... But the equipment quality and money wasn't there at the time... so it still would have been really bad...

Anymore advice would be helpful and greatly appreciated... Happy Holidays!

Thanks again

Note: you'll need either an external monitor or a modification to the LCD to see the image rightside-up with BOTH of the those cameras. The magnet flip trick does NOT work. Just discovered that myself. The modification requires "breaking" open the LCD panel. Not pretty, but it works (kinda - already heard someone's broke). Just an FYI.

Okay... my final question... Please somebody reply... I'm beggin ya...

If I used a 16:9 wide screen monitor... and shot with a wide angle/telephoto lens... Would the crop on the monitor show the 16:9 wide screen? Would I be able to get 16:9 widescreen to transfer to film and project in theatre?

Somebody please reply...

Or can the La2700 16:9 anamaphoric adaptor can get attached to a Nikon lens...

Thanks again!
Happy New Year!

I bought the Zeon (also know as iLuv). It's tablet style and you can turn it upside down if the magnet trick doesn't work for you. Best part - $145
