Rush, do you take Canadian orders? If you do, how is the warranty honored? Do I have to ship it back to you for repair?

Hi Flintstone, you would just have to ship to Panasonic USA for the rebate, or authorized repair centers, like Digitron in California. You can always ship to me as well, but it's faster and cheaper to ship direct to the repair facility.

With the dawn of the 100b and the hvx my question is when will the p2 cards carry the capacity to shoot a wedding cuz i dont know to wait for the p2 card or go with the 100b. any ideas any one.

Probably not for at least a year, and even then probably not affordably. For the near term the solution you're looking for is the FireStore FS-100.

if you're shooting uncompressed HD, on a P2 card you'll get about four minutes worth of (wedding) video on a 4 gig card, not quite sure but kinda something like that.
so a wedding or a doc. in which stuff is continuosly happening there's no way u can be swaping cards in the middle of all the action.
I guess it works better on a "movie" in which u shoot some scene, go dump the data into the computer, then load the cards back in, that's the way it works with film magazines anyway.

how about the video ipod, is there a 1394 to usb converter?

I wouldn't use the video ipod for something that important for a couple of reasons.
1. I don't know what the drive rpm speed is of the new ones but the older ones aren't 7200 rpm
2. Most people that use the ipod aren't constantly reading and writing to the drive all day meaning that by storing on it in that fashion you risk a greater chance of crapping out your drive.
3. Apple doesn't warranty data loss.

Well, the smaller the drive, the less rpms they typically have, but they're also way, way, way, way slower. The bigger the drive, the faster the transfer rate -- even at the same RPM, because the outer surfaces of the disk fly by the read/write head so much faster. Small drives are slow, inherently, and they will always be slower than larger drives.

I would consider shooting weddings on the HVX at DVCPRO50 myself, since I would still be getting 16:9 high quality SD with 4:2:2 depth. Considering most people don't really have some form of HD player, they would primarily appreciate the warm and brilliant color spectrum that the DVCPRO50 format gives (like Digibeta), and would still be able to display it on their 16:9 LCD's at home from a regular DVD-player. You can also always up-res that kind of footage and give them an HD master on Blu-laser down the road.

As for the ipod solution, yes the new ipods wont work, the old ones might but it will be slow. Firewire likes to power data down the line if the device is ready or not, but I believe the HVX is supposed to be able to adapt the speed to the outboard device. The new devices may be a little faster, but the whole USB to firewire converter (yes they make those) is just a bad bulky solution.

The good thing is that most usual DV capture devices such as the mce quickstream etc. will work as external drives, so they should work and be very fast and safe. In fact, devices known to be a little sketchy like the quickstream probally will be a much better product as a HVX offload device rather than a DV capture device.

Of course not. MiniDV records miniDV. This has been asked and answered a thousand times, and the answer isn't going to change. miniDV records miniDV, and only miniDV.

Disappear? As in, people who have them stop using them? Or, disappear out of the stores?

If you mean from the stores, yes they'll disappear as they get bought up. Most stores are already sold out of them, and it's possible that only B&H still has any stock left.

But if you mean "disappear" in the idea that people with them will stop using them, why would that happen? There are plenty of old-timers on this board still using their original DVX100s, and tens of thousands using DVX100As -- where would they disappear to?

I was meaning as in "disappear" and not be available anymore for purchase, other than a grey market purchase.

When they're sold, they're sold. They're not being manufactured anymore, so yes, when they're sold out they will not be available anymore. They're already pretty much to that point, as only B&H really has any left. The 100B is a replacement, the 100A is discontinued.

They just arrived today, so I'm not surprised it's on the site yet. As for pricing and contents, I don't know the official bundle details, although I can now say that yes, the DVX Book/DVD is bundled with it, and it's been updated to address the DVX100B's new features. I believe the Magic Bullet Editors software comes with it too, but that's based off of what Abel Cine posted; I don't have firsthand knowledge about that.

I'd recommend just calling Birns and asking them about what deal they're offering. I know the MSRP is $3995 but I don't know what their selling price is.

Barry,

I just got my hands on a new DVX100b and it came with everything from what you said but the DVX book/DVD seems to be the non-updated version. It has no mention of the new features of the B version of the camcorder. :( How can I get my hands on the updated book/dvd? Can Jan help me on this issue?

I've been waiting on the sidelines for the dvx100b to come out. Originally was going to get the A version but since the B was coming out this month with the new features. I waited till it was available and now I got one! I must say this is an awesome camera to work with and boy I can't wait to take it out for a spin!
